Notes for John Helmick:
BIOGRAPHY: From "The Henckle Genealogy."
The name of Helmick has been traced in a history of the Pennsylvania Dutch to near the city of Strasburg in Alsace, Germany. It is supposed that they came over with a large emmigration about 1700 to 1730 and landed at Philadelphia, PA.
Authentic history begins with four brothers who lived on Red Stone Creek near where Uniontown, PA now stands. They all fought in the Revolutionry War. From: Mrs. Frank Hamilton.
BIOGRAPHY: According to:STACIE BURTON-GUMP
The HELMICK family is recorded in "Rietstap Armorial General."
ARMS: "De gu a un casque, d'azur, grille d'or" Translated: "Red, one blue helmet, grills of gold"
Origin of the name: "One who makes handles"
The name was first spelled Helmich, and has been misspelled Helmicke, Hellmick, Helmuck, Helmrich, Helmet, etc.
It is believed the first of our Helmick family came to America about 1643, settled in Jamestown, VA about 1650 and died there. They came from Germany and were proud to be German. They hated the word "Dutch". They were proud of their German ancestory and the fact that they were of aristocratic heritage, and lived up to it to the best of their ability being very successful at that. The Helmick name has been traced to near the city of Strasburg in Alsace, Germany.
Some researchers believe the Helmicks to be Dutch Huguenots. Huguonot was the name given French Protestants (by the Catholics) of the 16th & 17th centuries who fled to Germany in the days of the Reformation and the emigration to America was made to have a home with freedom to worship God. One Henry Helmick, who came to the U.S. in 1848, was born 2 OCT 1808 at Buende, Prussia, nine miles from Berlin, Germany, which definitely places Helmicks in Prussia more than 150 years later.
The first census of the U.S. taken in 1790 lists Helmicks in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania. John and Jacob Helmick are listed as tax payers in Hardy Co., VA 1782-1787
The Virginia State archives lists 11 Helmicks as Confederate Veterans: A.F. Helmick, Abraham Helmick, Charles M. Helmick, Daniel Helmick (2nd Lt.), Issac Helmick, Jacob Helmick, Josiah Helmick, Miles P. Helmick, P. (Peter) Helmick, Robet W. Helmick (Col.), William Helmick
JOHN HELMICK, our first proginator to be born in America settled near Harper's Ferry. When his sons were grown they settled up the river on the south branch of the Potomac River.
