Holbert McClure Sr. to Henry Cromer, 15 Oct 1880
"This deed of conveyance made and executed this, the 15th day of October, 1880, by and between Holbert McClure of the first part and Henry Cromer of the second part, all of the county of Rockcastle state of Kentucky.
"Witnesseth that whereas sometime before the burning of the county court clerk office of said county, I made a deed of conveyance to Nathan McClure and said deed was destroyed and whereas said Henry Cromer has bought the tract of land from said McClure heirs for which said Nathan McClure had paid me and deed to him as afore stated. Wherefore this deed from me to said Cromer in lieu of the deed destroyed as above.
"Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the (unreadable, maybe "promises"), I do by this (unreadable) sell and convey unto Henry Cromer the following described tract of land situated in said county and state and on the waters of Skeggs Creek and bounded as follows.
"Beginning at a beech gum, thence with a west course to a chestnut oak and two dogwoods, then with Ingram Renner's line to a maple, then with Wm Mink's line to white oak, then with Mink's line to a beech and sugar tree at the creek, then a straight line to the beginning containing one hundred acres be the same more or less…"
Note: I need to again look at this property on the PVA map. According to my notes, it was near the Walnut Grove Cemetery, but there is no record of Ingram owning land near there. Part of 50:5.04

Holbert McClure to Ingram Renner, 25 Apr 1864
"This indenture of bargain and sale made and entered into this, the 25th of April, 1864, between Holbert McClure and Rebecca his wife of the one part and Ingram Renner of the other part, all of Rockcastle County…in consideration of thirty dollars…this day sold…to the said Ingram Renner a certain boundary of land lying and being in Rockcastle County on the waters of Rockcastle River and bounded as follows:
"Beginning one rod from the fence at the big road north of the house where Adam Renner formerly lived, thence with the ridge road to a (unreadable word) kiln made by Jacob and W. Frederick, thence to the Kincaid road at the pond(?) with said road, including the mouth of Pond Hollow, thence a straight line to the top of the ridge where the road turns to John Linville's, thence a straight line to the beginning…"

This Holbert McClure is Holbert Sr. In 1860 he is living in the Walnut Grove area, but in 1870 he's in District #1, which is Mt. Vernon (Walnut Grove that year is in District #5). Living with him in 1870 is Green Renner.
I believe this to be the first of Ingram's many land purchases. This land lies somewhere east of Hwy 1249 between Pongo and Buffalo, most probably just south of Pongo.
Ingram sells a piece of this land to Nathan McClure in 1882 and sells the remainder to William Bullock in 1883. In the later sale, Ingram specifically says this is the land he bought from H. H. McClure and the description is virtually the same, except Ingram says the land is on Eagle Creek. Eagle Creek is a tributary of the Rockcastle River, so either description is correct; Ingram's is just more specific.
Although it's not certain, the portion that Nathan McClure purchases from Ingram is traded to Alva Renner below, then to H.B. Reams, and finally to Elisha Renner in 1906 (see below). Elisha also buys land in the same general area from William Bullock. I think it's conceivable that the Elisha ultimately ended up with the bulk of this property

Here's some other newspaper tidbits.
I was at the RC courthouse and library today. Didn't find anything you didn't already know about William N. and Emelize Cromer.
I went to the library to try to find an obituary on Ingram. As luck would have it, they're missing the issue the week after his death. Same with Elizabeth.
Looks like Granderson owned the land where the Price-Renner Cemetery is. I can only follow it back to Lucy, Granderson's daughter, who married John Grider. They left the land to their daughter Mary Grider Cummins, who then sold it to H.M. Cromer in 1942.
It also looks like Granderson owned the land that joined the old John Renner farm on the southwest. It (170 acres) was bought by Mary Grider from Angeline, Aaron, John, and Rencie in 1902 for $1. I'll bet Granderson turned over in his grave.
The land that join Boone Cromer's land (which is the land where Walnut Grove Cemetery is) on the southwest was sold by W.B. Cromer to Henry Cromer in 1926. This property lies between Boone Cromer property (Holbert McClure Sr to Henry Cromer in 1880) and the W.N. Cromer to Arnold Cromer sell of 1936.
I still don't know what Ingram owned down in there and still don't know how he came up with it. It's about like Cyrenius owning Jacob's farm, which, best I can tell at this point, lay near the mouth of Long Branch, which takes off of Skeggs Creek very near the Walnut Grove Cemetery: "...on Skeggs Creek near the mouth of Long Branch, bounded by the lands of Joseph Cromer, Holbert McClure, and Jacob Renner..." DB J, p. 9; 7 Feb 1865.
We don't have much info on Elisha Sr. I wonder again about that rumor that Ingram was his kid. It's possible that Elisha was married before he married Sarah Decker. Both Cyrenius and Ingram would work, age-wise, as his sons, although we've still got the problem of their absence in the 1850 census.
Somehow, though, both of these guys ended up with land down in the Walnut Grove valley, which is out of synch with their later locations.
At this point, it looks like Holbert McClure owned most, if not all, of the Walnut Grove valley by the 1860s. What he didn't own was connected with Jacob Renner and Joseph Cromer, both who were related by marriage. I can't help but think there was an early Renner-McClure marriage we don't have a record for. Also a Renner-Row marriage. I think Solomon Row is connected by marriage, too. And we can't forget Malakiah Linville, who owned land that bordered said Row and Cyrenius/Jacob Renner.
So, we got Jacob (not sure whether Sr or Jr) in the WG valley, John Sr just up the creek, and Adam on top of the hill above the valley. Someone, either Jacob Jr or Sr (I'm getting the tax list microfilm from Gary and pore through some of it again), owned land on Line Creek. Where was Elisha Sr and Sylvester?
Miscellaneous notes:
1. Joesph Renner's (son of Vincent) middle initial was J. He's refered to as "J.J. Renner" in a Kirby land sell. His wife, Rebecca, was daughter of William Kirby. I've got a feeling that Rebecca and James William Kirby (who marries Vincent's daughter, Barbary) was brother and sister.
2. John C. and Elizabeth Cromer were living in Sullivan County, MO, in 1872.
3. According to a land sell between the Joseph Cromer heirs and William Cromer, Joseph had a daughter Nancy who married Andy Bray. I don't have Andy and Nancy Bray in my database. Do you?
4. Kizziah Linville's parents were Nathaniel and Elizabeth McClure.
Question: Is William Cromer listed in the RC Cemetery Book?

Holbert McClure to James Smith, 7 Feb 1865
Holbert gave James Smith of OH the coal mining rights of some land he owned in Rockcastle County. The pertinent part of the description is: "…on Skeggs Creek, near the mouth of Long Branch, bounded by the lands of Joseph Cromer, Holbert McClure and Jacob Renner…"Deed Book J, p.9.
I'm not sure where Jacob Renner Jr's land was, but we know where it wasn't. It wasn't where the Walnut Grove Cemetery is, as Holbert later sells that land to Henry Cromer. It wasn't on the east side of the mouth of Long Branch and Skeggs Creek, either; Holbert McClure Jr lived on that land, owned by Sr in 1876 (Deed Book O, p. 346). That tract is owned today by William Dean Kirby and Christine Kirby and runs from south of the cemetery north to the concrete bridge over the Long Branch.
It is possible that Holbert bought a portion of Jacob's land and that the deed was destroyed in the courthouse fire. If that was the case, then Jacob's farm may have been very near the WG cemetery. More likely, at least in my mind, is that Jacob Jr bought his farm from Holbert McClure and sold pieces of it to other family members, including Cyrenius (and perhaps Vincent, too), who sold his portion to Solomon Row in 1865.
In light of Cyrenius's selling of the "farm formerly owned by Jacob Renner" to Row, and said farm bordering Row and Malakiah Linville, I think it is likely that Jacob's land was about ½ mile from the concrete bridge up Long Branch on the west side, perhaps bordering the "old John Renner farm" at one time (Jacob owned 400 acres in 1853 and 150 acres in 1864).
Another note on Holbert McClure, Sr: In Feb 1832, he bought 5,000 acres of the Robert Buckner land at auction. At his high point, he owned more than 10,000 acres of land in Rockcastle County (he reportedly purchased the entire 10,000-acre Buckner survey for $25).
Holbert McClure Sr to Vincent Renner heirs, 10 Aug 1866
"This indenture made and entered into this the 10th day of August, 1866, between Holbert McClure Sr and Rebecca his wife of the one part, and Charity Renner, widow of Vincent Renner dec'd, Samantha Renner, Josiah Renner, Barbara A. Renner and William S. Renner, infant children of the said Vincent and Charity Renner of the other part.
"Witnesseth that the said party of the first part in consideration of $(amount left blank) in hand paid by the said Vincent Renner in his lifetime sold and hereby covey to the party of the second part the following boundary of land lying in Rockcastle, KY, on the waters of Skeggs Creek supposed to adjoin an old survey in the name of Robert Buckner and including part of what is called the O'Possum Hollow and bounded as follows:
"Beginning at a chestnut oak on a ridge between the Long Branch and the O'Possum Hollow, thence…containing 50 acres…"
I'm not sure where Possum Hollow is, but the description tells us that the land was somewhere near Long Branch, which is where Charity says her land is in 1869. Vincent is listed with 150 acres of land on Skeggs Creek in 1856, two years before his death. Thousands of acres of land that would have been considered on the waters of Long Branch is now owned by some Whitaker heirs. This land includes most of what Charity, Solomon Row, J.J. Cromer, and others once owned.Unfortunately, because the land is in a few very large tracts, it's now impossible to tell where each parcel originally was located.

The only Bradley deed I could find that was old enough was of a sell from Harvey Bradley to James Bradley in 1885. It was for 50 acres on the waters of Line Creek. Harvey's wife's name was Elizabeth; no mention of James's wife. Any help?
Some of the land in the Walnut Grove valley, near Holbert McClure and Henry Cromer, was called "part of the Harve Bradley farm" in some of the deeds I saw a month of so back. The reference was to some of the land either Henry or W.N. Cromer bought, I think. It was hard to tell exactly where it was.
Speaking of Holbert McClure, I found a wealth of info on him and the Robert Buckner land. He did indeed buy all 10,000 acres, but not for $25--he bought it for $15. I found a re-copy of the deal fromwhen it was originally recorded in 1833. Evidently, Holbert had copies of some of his deeds and they found their way into the deed books as time went by. This particular one was with deed dated 1909. I asked the people at the courthouse and they said everything was destroyed in the fire. Any deeds that pre-date the fire we brought in later by individuals and re-recorded. Too bad our Renners didn't do such.
Potentially very valuable is this: In 1866, Holbert had a survey made of all his land from the Buckner grant. I haven't had time to go through it yet (it's 10 pages long), but it includes a survey map showing the area from the mouth of Skeggs Creek on the Rockcastle River westward to Line Creek. Although nothing but the actual survey is to scale, it's still going to help. One immediate thing--they did call the main route through the area the "Kincaid Road." I'll keep you posted and send some more transcriptions to you next week.

Holbert McClure's purchase of Buckner grant, 29 May 1833
This deed is a re-copy of the original. Someone must have brought a copy of it to the courthouse in 1909, judging from the dates of the deeds around it (Deed Book O, p. 342). Parts of it must have been unreadable, because there are blank lines indicating missing words in the re-copy. There are also words in the re-copy that are unreadable, which appear in brackets.
Apparently, the land was sold for back taxes.
"This indenture made this 29th day of May, 1833, between Thomas J. Smith, Deputy Sheriff for William Smith, Sheriff of Rockcastle County of the one part, and Holbert McClure of the other part.
"Witnesseth: That whereas on the 2nd day of July, 1832, there issued from the Clerk's Office of the Rockcastle Circuit Court an execution against the estate of Philip Reed, Robert ______, Samuel Buckner, John Buckner, Thomas Buckner, ______ Buckner, Walter Buckner, and Holiday ______ ______Holiday ____________________________________________________________________________________
4th Monday in August next [unreadable word] which execution was placed in the hand of the said Thomas Smith, Deputy Sheriff ______ and there being no personal estate of said defendants out of which to make the amount of the aforesaid execution or any part thereof, the said was levied on 10,000 acres of land lying in the county of Rockcastle on the waters of Rockcastle River, patented ______ Robert Buckner and shown to be the estate of said defendants, and after advertising the same according to law, it was sold by the said Deputy Sheriff to the highest bidder as the law directs on the 4th Monday in July, 1832, at the courthouse in Mount Vernon, Rockcastle County, being a court day, and the said Holbert McClure became the purchaser, being the highest bidder at the price of fifteen dollars.
