JOHN CARTER of "THE NEST", Lancaster County, Virginia, writing in 1858, said THOMAS' "brother JOHN" came to Virginia with THOMAS and settled south of the river in Essex. THOMAS appears in Lancaster County, Virginia, before the year 1653, aged 22 when he paid tithes for himself and four servants (See William Armstrong Crozier, Ed., Virginia County Records, Vol, 5, Virginia Heraldica, Being a A Registry of Virginia Gentry Entitled to Coat Armor [Baltimore: 1965, reprint of the 1908 edition] PP. 87-88.) From Colonel JOHN CARTER, who had gone to Lancaster County from Nansemond County about the time THOMAS landed in Nansemond County, Virginia, Captain THOMAS bought 800 acres in Lancaster County on the "Easternmost" branch of the Corotoman River and, 1 June 1654, acknowledged the debt in court: 12, 852 pounds of tobacco to be paid the following October "at ye dwelling house of the SD Mr. THo: Carter", and 130 pounds sterling on 18 Sept 1655. Lancaster County Court, 1663;
Capt. Thomas Carter likely was the first of the family to come to Virginia from England. According to WFT, Vol. 18., Family 570, he sailed from London aboard SAFETH on August 10, 1635. By 1650he was in Nansemond Co. Virginia. He bought 800 acres of land in Lancaster County on the Corotoman River, from Col. John Carter.He was a Captain in the Va. Based upon WFT 18, Family 1907, He likely was the 6th son of Anscell Carter, a merchant in the City of London. Charles fled England upon the beheading of King Charles I, Coming to Virginia by 1650 and established Barford Plantation in Lancaster County. It is believed his first wife and children died in route to the United States, and he then married Katherine Dale, who, with her parents, had fled England when Cromwell took control. He married (1) Mary Anscell-Parkhurst Abt. 1662 in St. John's, Bedfordshire, England. She was born Abt. 1635 in St. John's, Bedfordshire, England. Warner, premier historian and Carter researcher who has written numerous accounts of this family, says, " There are definitely is a connection to Robert 'King' Carter, and it is believed Capt. Thomas Carter and 'King' Carter were first cousins - their fathers Major Thomas Carter Sr. and Colonel John Carter, believed to be the sons of John Bridget Benion Carter of Newgate Street, London."
