OCRACOKEwas the Port ofEntry for the years 1815through 1866. The Collector of Customs was stationed atarid was a resident of Portsmouth Island. It was called Port of Ocracoke because of Ocracoke Inlet and not because it was located at Ocracoke.
- There no surviving records by the collector as far as cargo or taxlevied on cargo’s of ships. There are no records of ships entering or departing through Ocracoke Inlet. The records that did survive are in the National Archives Records Group 41.. Records of The Bureau of Marine .Inspection & Navigation, Washington, DC
The records are faded and very hard to read.I have copiedhere the Records of’ Ships owned or operated by men of Ocracoke and Portsmouth Islands. I am working on and hope to complete the records of all vessels Enrolled, Registered , and Surrendered at, this Port, but it is a very slow process. For this reason I have for, you here, a. list, of’ our local vessels and seaman.
Records of Correspondence of the Treasury Department and Collector of Port of Ocracoke are also available at the National Archives and I am working on copying these, though there seems to be but, a little information of interest. These records may be included in a future publication of the complete list of records of Port Ocracoke.
Records covered here are; CERTIFICATE OF’ ENROLLMENT, CERTIFTCATE OF REGTSTRY, AND, CERTIFICATE OF SURRENDER. The difference in (‘certificate of Certificate and Certificate of Registry is not. clear.
Note that many of the vessels were built on Ocracoke.
