Notes for Thomas Allen Thompson:
Sources of information for the descendants of the Thomas A. Thompson family are based on research and information gathered by Forrest L. Coling, Jr., Mark Shaffer - 2nd Great Grandson, James Austin Wilkinson - 2nd Great Grandson, Carl Thompson - Great Grandson, Rosalyn Thompson Coling - 2nd Great Granddaughter, Don Coling - 3rd Great Grandson and Kenneth Lee Thompson - Great Grandson.
It's believed but not proven that his middle name was Allen. His grandson, Thomas Allen Thompson, son of Bourbon Thompson, is believed to have been named after him.
The Thompson family of Thomas and Sarah isn't listed in the 1850 Census Index for Indiana. The 1874 Peoples Guide for Montgomery County, Indiana mentions that the family moved to Montgomery County in 1850 but apparently too late for the Indiana Census that year. It's assumed that the family is listed on an 1850 Census record for Kentucky but so far, no records have been found. dc/2/2004.
Another possibility about the 1850 Census for the Thompson family is that the family may have moved from Kentucky in 1850 before the census was taken there and thus there is a possibility that there may not be an 1850 census record to be found for the family. dc/2/2004.
The 1860 and 1870 Censuses for Brown Township, Montgomery County confirm the approximate ages of family members without exact birth dates and support birth dates found by Mark Shaffer.
Thomas's age in years for the 1860 Census of 6/20/1860 is listed as 39. Sarah's age is listed as 37.
Thomas's age in years for the 1870 Census of 8/11/1870 is listed as 49. Sarah's age is listed as 48.
From this information and tombstone data it is believed that Sarah's birth date is about May of 1822 and Thomas's birth year is 1821. There is a possibility that Sarah's birth month could be as late as July or August according to Census data but there is a possibility that the actual census taking might have occurred perhaps a couple of months before the actual date given on the official document so it is believed but not confirmed that the 10 months and the mention of March as the month she died found on her tombstone is correct. It is hoped that an obituary or death certificate will resolve the differences that have been found.
The birth dates of Thomas and Sarah are not fully verified at this point. Parts of their tombstone inscriptions are difficult to read so full verification not yet possible. Only their death dates and ages at death are given. Most of their death dates are readable but birth dates not yet verifiable as those portions of inscriptions had unreadable age information. Also note that about a foot off the top of their spire type monument has broken off and lays on the ground next to the monument. - 7/7/2001

However, the news article that would prove this could not be located in any of the extensive collections of microfilms of Lafayette newspapers of this time period that are located in the Lafayette Public Library. Official county death records that are on file in Tippecanoe County begin with the year of 1882.

Notes for Sarah Ann Talbott:
According to the 1860 and 1870 Censuses, Sarah is listed as being born in Indiana. Previous information about her that listed her birth place as Bardstown, Kentucky is believed to be incorrect.
It's believed that the Talbott family moved from Indiana to Kentucky sometime prior to 1840 and Sarah met Thomas for the first time in Kentucky where they were married.

Marriage Notes for Thomas Thompson and Sarah Talbott:
Information on the marriage date of Thomas and Sarah Thompson and some of their children was found by Mark Shaffer on the Mormon Genealogy Web page.
Their marriage was performed by Moses Crume who was probably a relative of Thomas Thompson from his maternal grandmother's family.
According to 1860 census records for Parke County, Indiana, many of Thomas' brothers and their families moved to Parke County, Indiana from Kentucky in the period between 1850 and 1860. The area of Brown Township in Montgomery County, Indiana that Thomas Thompson and his family moved to was on the border of and just east of Parke County. Several related Thompson families located to Jackson Township and three adjoining Parke County townships of Union, Raccoon and Adams. These townships are approximately 10 to 15 miles south of the area where Thomas and his family lived. As far as can be determined, Thomas and his family was the only related Thompson family that settled in Montgomery County, Indiana by 1860.
According to the 1860 Census, the family was living near Waveland, Brown Twp., Montgomery County, Indiana. Thomas is listed as age 39 and farming. Thomas' real estate value is listed as $4900 and his personal value as $400. Sarah is listed as age 37. Son William is listed as age 18 and farming. Son James R. is listed as age 16 and farming. Daughter Feabey J. (Phoebe) is listed as age 14. Son John N. is listed as age 12. Son Samuel T. is listed as age 10. Daughter Mary is listed as age 8. Son Reuben S. (Bourbon) is listed as age 6. Daughter Martha A. is listed as age 3 months. Thomas is listed as being born in Kentucky. Sarah and the three youngest children, Mary, Reuben (Bourbon) and Martha are listed as being born in Indiana. The five older children are listed as being born in Kentucky. The census was enumerated in this locality on June 20th, 1860.
According to the 1870 Census, the family was still living near Waveland, Brown Twp., Montgomery County, Indiana. Thomas is listed as age 49 and farming. Thomas' personal value is listed as $1125. Sarah is listed as age 48 and keeping house. Daughter Phela J. (Phebe) is listed as age 22 and a housekeeper. Son Samuel T. is listed as age 20 and farming. Daughter Nettie (Mary) is listed as age 17. Son Bourbon S. is listed as age 16. Daughter Mattie (Martha) is listed as age 10. Son Warliston Allen is listed as age 8. Daughter Mollie is listed as age 5. Daughter Hattie is listed as age 1. Thomas and the two oldest children, Phela J. (Phebe) and Samuel are listed as being born in Kentucky. Sarah and all of the younger children are listed as being born in Indiana. Also living in the household and believed to be a nephew of Thomas' is James E. Thompson who is listed as age 14 and a farm hand and born in Kentucky.
Sometime before Thomas and Sarah passed away in 1879, they relocated north to the adjoining county of Tippecanoe in the area of Stockwell and Clarks Hill in Lauramie Township. It's assumed that all of the surviving younger family members moved with them. The exact location that they lived has not been determined. It's believed but not verified that some of the younger children listed on the 1870 Census may have died before 1880. No records for some of these children have been located after 1870.
Thomas's and Sarah's tombstone is found at Fairview Cemetery just outside the town limits of Stockwell in Lauramie Township, Tippecanoe County, Indiana. The road to the cemetery is located off the county road that heads west out of Stockwell on the western boundary of town. The road is easy to miss as there are no signs that mention the cemetery and point the way. Turning north on this " town boundary" road will lead after a half mile to the cemetery which is on the west side of the road. The cemetery itself has a sign at the front gate. Thomas's and Sarah's stone is located about in the center of the cemetery and just north of the center lane that runs through the middle of the cemetery. The stone itself can best be described as a spire type monument and the top of it is broken off. Thomas and his information is inscribed on one side of the stone and Sarah's on the opposite side. Their dates of birth are given in the number of years, months and days old they were when each died. Their names can be read fairly well but some of the information is hard to read due to weathering.
It's perhaps an odd coincidence that their oldest son William and many of his family and also Thomas's and Sarah's son John are buried in a cemetery with the same name but in a different state. These descendants are buried in Fairview Cemetery, Major County, Oklahoma.
An original photo exists taken of them within a year or so of their passing.
The death and burial information for three children of Thomas and Sarah Thompson buried at Methodist Cemetery in Waveland, Brown Township was found in Cemeteries of Montgomery County, Indiana in the local history section of the Crawfordsville, Indiana District Public Library home page. The inscription on each of the children's tombstones reads 'd/o T A & S A' for the two girls and 's/oT A & S A' for their son, which would be correct for Thomas A. and Sarah Thompson who lived in the Brown township area of Montgomery County, Indiana according to census records during this time. The names of the three children are Charles, Harriet and Hattie. dc1/2004.
