|My tree is almost exclusively English except for one Scottish and one Welsh link. My direct male line goes back to 17C Westmoreland "Statesmen" Yeoman Farmers. The West Yorkshire area also features heavily on this line, again as farmers, based around Addingham near Skipton. My mother's side has a mixture of names from all over England, Scotland and Wales. All of my immediate ancestors over the last 100 years have a common thread, i.e. they were all part of the South Yorkshire coal mining community. Strictly speaking my surname should be TOWNSON My father's (Robert Bruce TOWNSON) mother Winifrid DAWSON died when he was an infant, his uncle Jack DAWSON adopted him and my father changed his name by deed poll when he was 16.|
This site is dedicated to the memory of the mining community of South Yorkshire and particularly my Great Uncle, Joseph FRY who died at Poelkapelle in 1917 as a member of the King's Own Light Infantry.
