Meeker County Memories, 1987, Published by The Meeker Co. Historical Society, LC86-63742 - John O’Doughertay married Bridget Kilday. Bridget was the cook at the Atkinson Hotel in Forest City. John drove a supply wagon from Fort Snelling to Fort Abercrombie in Dakota. Forest City was one of his rest stops, and thus a friendship was begun which ended in marriage, proving the old adage that “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” They had five children, one dying at two years of age.
Bridget was an excellent cook --I know, she was my grandmother. The descendants of John and Bridget now living in Meeker County are: Chad McAloon; Todd McAloon; Mary C. Rogers; Donald Dougherty; Dianne Hierlmaier and her four children Timothy, Christine, Joy and Laura; Kelly Peterson and her children Buddy, Mandy and Jesse; and Robert Dougherty and Margaret Berg, who still live on the original John Dougherty farm. Doughertys have lived on this farm for one hundred and thirty years.
Members of each generation have served our country in the armed forces. One, Jennings Ryan, grandson of Dennis and Mary, was killed in action in World War I. Another Joseph Dougherty, son of Daniel and Mary, died of fever while serving in the Spanish-American War.
St. Gertrude’s Church and cemetery occupy the land deeded to the church by Daniel and John Dougherty.

PIONEER RESIDENT CALLED BY DEATH - John Dougherty Passed Away Friday Last at His Home in Harvey Town.
John Dougherty, a resident of Meeker county since 1856, died Friday of last week at this home in Harvey after a long period of failing health, at the age of 72 years.
The funeral services were held Monday from the Catholic church in Forest City.
Mr. Dougherty came to Meeker county in the summer of 1856 with his father, John Dougherty, and uncle Thomas Dougherty and their families. This group of early pioneers located at once in Harvey town where the deceased continued to make his home till death called him. He is survived by this wife, one son, John Dougherty, who is located on the old homestead, and three daughters, Mrs. Hugh Dougherty of Grand Forks, Miss Rose Dougherty of Eden valley, and Mrs. M.E. McAloon of Harvey.

On Friday last the summons came and John Dougherty, of Harvey bid farewell to the friends on earth and his spirit went to join those who had gone before. He was 72 years of age at the time of his death. He had been afflicted with diabetes for two or three years and it finally caused his death. The funeral was held from the Catholic Church at Forest City, on Monday last. He is survived by one son, John with whom he made his home and three daughters, Mrs. Hugh Dougherty, of Grand Forks, Miss Rose Dougherty, of Eden Valley, and Mrs. Matt McAloon, of Harvey.
John Dougherty was one of the early settlers in Meeker County, coming as he did with the Dougherty colony in the spring of 1856 and with them settling in Harvey town, near the beautiful strip of timber which has ever since been known as the Dougherty grove. There with the rest, he experienced the trials and hardships incident to the Indian war of 1862. Right there, for sixty years he tilled the soil, married and raised a most commendable family, and on Friday last closed a useful and well spent life. A grand recor. Yes happy John Dougherty is gone and those who knew him the best will mourn his the most.

St. Gertrude's Church and cemetery occupy the land deeded to the church by Daniel and John Dougherty. The present church edifice was built in 1867. John Dougherty and other hauled the lumber from St. Cloud. It was located north of the stockade and was moved in 1897 to its present location since which time it has been remodeled and enlarged. The cemetery which is a part of the church grounds is one of the oldest in the county and cantains the marked graves of many of the sturdy territorial pioneers. Among the burials in this cemetery is the grave of John Dougherty, who assisted in the interment of the victims of the Acton Massacre.
