Notes for Jacob Dove:
On Friday June 21, 1850, Jacob Dove a man convicted of a most cold blooded murder was executed.Jacob went to the gallows for taking the life of a man by the name of George Linker. This crime for which he paid the penalty with his own life was committed in Cabarrus Co., NC.The records show that Jacob lived with the wife of his youth only a few years, by whom he had two sons.Jacob parted with his wife and permitted his affections to fasten upon a base woman in his neighborhood. An improper intercourse for some twenty years had existed between them. She bore him other children (of which I have found no records of at this time). The story goes that quarrels ensued between them and that their disgraceful relationship was at last broken up.About this time the unfortunate George Linker engaged himself to marry the woman, and was occasionally known to be at her home.Jacob was displeased with this, and as the story goes, resolved on preventing the marriage, even at the cost of George Linker's life.During the trial the evidence against Jacob showed that he had threatened Linker, and that he had been seen on more than one occasion the day of Linker's murder with a gun.It is also noted that the day of execution that Jacob's two sons were present at the gallows for the awfully solemn occasion. The last thing noted about Jacob is, on the whole, the prisoner was a remarkable man in at least one respect:In all his trials, when the verdicts of the jury was both for the first and second times declared to him, at each pronunciation of the sentence of death; and even under the gallows, on all of these overwhelmingly solemn occasions, he exhibited the most singular firmness that was ever witnessed. Not a muscle of his face was moved by them, but the most rigid self-possession was maintained throughout. It is also noted that Jacob Dove all the way to the end denied having any hand in, or knowledge of, the murder of George Linker.(The foregoing taken from the Carolina Watchman of Salisbury, NC. dated Thursday evening, June 27, 1850)
