John Sheridan studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1866. Married the same year, he visited Texas and Mexico.He served as register of the land office in Fairplay, Colorado, then later at Fort Supply in Indian Territory.He was active in politics, and was one of the speakers at the Republican Stae Committee in Ohio in 1868, and was the Republican candidate for state senator from Perry County in that year.He was said to have been a candidate for the first governor of Oklahoma.While his brother, Phil, was so active in the country's events, he applied to Washington for the post of sutler at Fort Supply.When government scandals were unearthed regarding the awarding of those positions, he came back to Ohio where he practiced law.
John was a very large man, with a 54" waist.At his daughter Nellie's home, a door to the sitting room had to be enlarged to permit him to enter.
