| Welcome to the Duke family home page. I have been researching the Duke families for only a few years so there will be updates and corrections in the future. |
My oldest known Duke ancestor is Henry Nathan Duke (1817 - 1891) from South Carolina. Henry married Martha Ann Hester about 1846 in Georgia (Marion County?) and resided in the Cedar Creek District of Taylor County, GA. until his death. Both are buried in the Duke Cemetery on Henry and Martha's homestead, now leased by Georgia Pacific. I believe Henry is a son of Lewis Duke and brother to Enoch and Darling Duke. Enoch is buried nearby at Mt. Nebo Cemetery in Charing and Darling at Singleton Cemetery in Tazewell. Lewis D.S. Duke is a known cousin of Henry and Meredith Duke may also be closely associated with this family. All were listed in the 1850 Marion County census.
Morgan Gwin Duke (1854-1918) and Martha Ann Hudson (1854-1928) were my ggrandparents and are buried in Magnolia Cemetery, Greenville, AL. Morgan and Martha migrated from Georgia to Alabama about 1885 with son Henry Rowland (1876-1931) and daughter Monia Mae (3/1879). Morgan Lee (1886-1948) and Mamie F.(1893-1938)were born in Butler County, AL.
Henry Rowland Duke married Emily "Jinnie" Virginia Nichols 9/27/1895 at the home of Dan Nichols in Oakey Streak, Butler County, AL. Henry and Jinnie had sons Hanceford Tracey, Ernest Quiller and daughter Vera. Jinnie died of pneumonia in Greenville 10/21/1901 at 23 years of age. Henry married Katie Walker 11/24/1902 and relocated to Mobile, AL.
Ernest Q. Duke (1898-1965) married Ella Rebecca Gillett (1915- )in Philadelphia, PA. on 9/14/1946. They had the following children; Robert William (1948-1966), William Roland (1949- ), Elizabeth Fern (1950-1992) and Ernest "Fussy" Sydney (1952- ).
I am certain of the lineage back to Henry N. Duke and Martha Hester. To date, I have not firmly established the relationship of Enoch and Darling Duke to Henry. There is a lot of research ahead. If you find data here of value, great. If you have information to offer, please do so.
Thank you for the visit and good luck with your research!
