The Extended Family Tree of Michael R. Dutton:Information about Archibald Alexander
of Menstire Archibald Alexander (b. Abt. 1540, d. September 13, 1621)
Notes for Archibald Alexander:
Archibald is associated with both the burgess of Stirling and Dunfermline, a merchant of Stirling (Jan 1590) and one of the bailies of Dunfermline (Dec. 1591). He was placed on the Council of the Dean of Guild of Stirling in Oct.1592, an appointment renewed in several successive years. Oct 1593 he is one of the bailies of the burgh of Stirling. In 1599 he was elected Dean of guild and one of the burgh commissioners to Parliament in 1600. Archibald died 13 Sept. 1621 and will mentions James Alexander as his lawful son. By his marriage to Elizabeth Alexander dau of Robert Alexander he was father to son James and a dau Elizabeth. Born 1590. James, only son was baptized at Stirling on 23 Dec 1591. James became a burgess of Stirling on 9th Sept 1623, 1629 and 1630 he was on the Dean’s Council, as James Alexander, merchand”, on roll of the town council on 23rd Sept 1633; also Nov 1636.

Rogers Memorials "Archibald Alexander of Tarbert had son Gorrie Alexander heir apparent (1627 and 1636 records) In 1631 Archibald Alexander of Tarbert acknowledged Sir William as chief of the clan Alister. (Looks like Allister and Alexander are used interchangeably)
1.4.1 James Alexander of Dromore, County Tyrone. His tombstone is decorated witht the arms of the House of Menstry. (In 1631 the chief of the Alexander clan, Archibald Alexander was called to Sir William's abode and gave over to Sir William the title of chief of clan so that he could have a coat of arms. John of Eredy is believed to be directly from Kintyre, not Menstry.)
From Roger's Memorials
Sir William did get a land grant in Ulster in 1616 from Sir James Cunningham who sold Feb 26 1616,-2000 acres called Decastrose and Portlogh. (From internet Donegal, 1618). However he was deprived in 1633 of this land by the Irish Court of Chancery as he had allowed a mere Irishman to obtain 1 quarter of the town of Mullaliglisse
Rogers Memorisal pg 7 " Archibald Alexander chief of the Tarbert, Kintyre clan did in 1631 with the bidding of Sir William so that Sir William could have a coat of arms---gave him the title of chief of the MacAlexander clan. Looks like in turn, Sir William influenced the powers that be to make Archibald a burgess of Stirling. So in that sense, the Tarbert line also had connection to Menstry.

A History of the Laggan District in Ulster Ireland
Text: On our recent trip to Donegal we met J.B. Shannon, age 90, who assisted in the 1975 reprinting of this book. He is the last living person who had anything to do with these books and he says they are still the BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research. From Lecky I quote, "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places..."
The Appendixes have footnotes which give much information.
Appendix A. (footnote 3) On the 1st of May 1613 James ?Cunningham let his lands a sfolows:----Eredy to Wm Arnett, Andrew Arnett, John Alexander, John Gutchine, Peter Stevenson, John Hamilton, Edward Homes and George Leich. (This is the earliest Alexander mentioned on record being in Ireland and the John of Eredy which most seem to think is the progenitor or our Scotch-Irish Alexander. Six other estates with names of leasees are mentioned.
