"Where do the Duttons come from?" I asked my Dad when I was growing up in Goose Bay."Fermeuse," was the answer, and that our family had been there since the 1700s.This answer, though correct, wasn't enough to cure me of my curiosity. In 1998, with the kick-start of the Dutton family tree prepared by my cousin Taryn and the Perry family tree prepared by my cousin Monica, I started researching my heritage, to the point where I now have over 20,000 names in my still-growing database - not all of whom are blood relatives, but that doesn't diminish the amount of typing!
My Dad's side in Newfoundland are Irish and English, mostly from the Southern Shore (Dutton, Lawlor, Coady, Hatfield, Brothers) and the Cape Shore (Griffin, Foley, Lundrigan, Power, Quilty, Keane/Cain, Coonay, Brennan, Skerry).
My Mum's side in Nova Scotia includes Planters and Loyalists (Perry/Parry, Haines, Porter, English, Cogswell, Bailey, Edgerton, Cole, Doggett, Harlow, West, Cobb, Nickerson, Crowell, Badger, Ellenwood, Corning, Foote, Goudey, Potter, Scott, Kniffin, Timpany, Clark, Saxton, Mullin, Trefry, Cox, Pineo), French "Foreign Protestants" from Montbeliard (Joudrey, Weuillemin, Daree, Menegaux), Ulster Scots (Mitchell), Germans (Zwicker, Weigel, Ramey, Hebb, Schultz, Haffner, Feiner, Meysener, Sommer, Walters, Beck, Meurer, Feindel, Frank, Wenzel, Conrad, Worther), and Swiss (Berringer, Tanner, Oxner). The links between New England and Nova Scotia are very strong in my mother's ancestry.
One of the interesting discoveries I have made recently is that, on my mother's side, we have several ancestors who were among the passengers on the Mayflower who founded Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620.Of the 102 passengers, we are direct descendants of 24 - John Alden, Isaac and Mary (Norris) Allerton, Mary Allerton, William and Mary (Wyrall) Brewster, Francis Cooke, Edward Fuller and his wife, Stephen and Elizabeth (Fisher) Hopkins, Giles Hopkins, Constance Hopkins, Damaris Hopkins, John Howland, Priscilla Mullins, William and Alice (nee ?) Mullins, Henry Sampson, Miles Standish, John and Joan (Hurst) Tilley, Elizabeth Tilley and Richard Warren. We are also related to another 11 - Bartholomew Allerton, Remember Allerton, Love Brewster, Wrestling Brewster, John Cooke, Samuel Fuller (b. 1580), Samuel Fuller (b. 1610), Oceanus Hopkins (who was born on the voyage), Joseph Mullins, and Edward and Ann (Cooper) Tilley.Another Mayflower passenger, Peter Browne, was the 2nd husband of Martha (nee ?) Ford, making him my step-11th great grandfather.
This site replaces the one I had previously. As before, I welcome any corrections, new photos, or suggestions. Please enjoy the site and thank you for any contribution you may have made to my research.
The site was created using Broderbund Family Tree Maker Version 5. Early in 2011 had a virus and had to wipe my computer's memory. My family tree file had been backed up previously on 3 floppy disks but now I am unable to open/read the GEDCOM files, as the first disk was corrupted. Genealogy.com tech support advised me that, unfortunately, there is not a downloadable file attached to the website, and that Family Tree Maker Version 5 is no longer supported in any fashion. Can anyone give me any advice as to how to recover the family tree file from the InterneTree on my website?
I have started the long process of re-entering my data into a new database.
