Notes for Conrad R. Huffman:
This man was very aloof about where he came from. He and his wife Melinda went by several different names in the United staes census records,Coonrad,Conrad,Aron.,Aaron,Coonri,Melinda,Ethel,Ethel M.,etc.Many tales have been told in the family ,Most of which were generated by Conrad himself, I'm sure. One is that he was involved in s killing, and had to change his name fearful of retribution, another is that he was one of the Hatfeilds in the Hatfeild -McCoy feud, still another is that he was a double agent during the Civilk War. There is a cave in Marion County that supposedly bears is name,"Huffman Cave, that played a part in the history of a Civil War battle fought there. We, the family, are trying to get at the truth, weather we do or not remains to be seen.
My gr gr grandpa Conrad Huffman was born in Germany in 1811,(Germany was under French rule) and about the time Napoleon Bonapart was invading Russia. His brother Aaron and he would eventually stow away aboard a ship sailing to America They wanted to go where heard there was landavailable to immigrants for homesteading. The two young men landed in New York and they soon parted company.Aaron going to Ohio and Conrad going southwest to missouri and getting married there.
Jewell Huffman, born near Big Flat ,AR. in 1914 did not have the privilege to see Huffman Knob until December 1999.Jewell said that she does not know how many children they had ,but she remembers one named Leonard.Leonard had a son named Robert that lived at Flippin,AR.
When Conrads's wife died he came to Aransas and setteled on a rocky knob, which came to known as Huffman Knob, which is in Searcy County. The gap he traveled through togo to and from his is known as Huffman's Gap,which lies in Marion County. There was few settlers in the regionat the time, but the neighbors that he had came to call him "Coonrod".This is the name that stuck for the rest of his life.
The story goes that when Coonrod firstfirst in Searcy County he found a cave ,near the top of the knob ,and that is where helived while he built his the home place. This same cave was later used towinter his cattle. The cave has two other wholes in the top where he could drop feed down to the cattle.
Conrad married Melinda Murry .Their children were Will ,John,Conrad JR.,Emily,Nathanial,Isaaic, and Jess.Conrad lived to his family grown.Jess his youngestson was in his early twinties when Conrad died at 103 years old.Conrad is buried near Cozahome Arkansas.
John married Annabelle Raby .They had five children,Jim,Ernie,Charlie,Janie and Frankie. After she passed away,he married Mary Elivabeth George and they had Sybil,Jewel,Ray,wilmus,Lorene,Rita,Zeta,Alton ,Virgina and Gene.
Conrad Jr. married Emmer Watts,Their children are Berlie,Shelton,Dovie, and Juanita.
One of the family stories is that Coonrod traded Melinda for a milk cow and then stole her back ,is a family favorite!
