|The Shoosmith One-Name Study Group holds the most comprehensive records of family history of the Shoosmiths/Shoesmiths of Sussex, England. Although concentration of research has been on the descendants of Edward Shuesmithe (circa 1575-1628) who, generation after generation, farmed the land for hundreds of years in the Laughton and East Hoathly parishes, a complete extraction has been made from the English Victorian Civil Registration Indexes of all Shoosmiths, Shoesmiths, Showsmiths, Shewsmiths, Shusmiths, Shuesmiths, etc., including those surnames with an 'e' on the end.In the early 19th century Shoosmiths thrived in Sussex and Kent while many Shoesmiths were attracted to the cotton industry of Lancashire, and more settled in Yorkshire. Today, there are Shoosmiths living in various counties of England and in such diverse countries as Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Over 100 years ago descendants of Edward Shuesmithe were living in Berbice, British Guiana (now Guyana.)|
The Shoosmiths married into other families and surnames recurring in our records include Brinkhurst, Child, Coppard, Farrant, Finlay, Fuller, Gower, Greig, Holmden, Illman (Ellman), Lambe, Lloyd, Mannington, Melville, Morris, Pelling (Pelland), Saxby, Sturt, Vincett, Vine and Willsher. (There are Lloyds and Willshers currently "lost" in the USA and Canada who are descendants of Edward Shuesmithe of Laughton.)
All enquiries and input welcome. Information will be gladly supplied.
