A Golden Wedding AnniversaryMr. and Mrs. Chas. Fellows Celebrated atHome Tuesday, Over Forty GuestsVery pleasant occasion was enjoyed by many friends of respected couple.
It is always pleasant to record the half-century anniversary of married life of he citizens of a community, for such an event always causes one to assume a retrospective attitude, and to think of the many changes which have taken place during such a period of married life. Yesterday Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fellows, highly respected citizens of Unionville, celebrated the half century mark of their married life, and in honor of the occasion about forty of their friend and relatives gathered at their home in Unionville.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Fellows are still very active, and entered the spirit of the day in a manner which gave their visitors, who had gathered to pay them homage, much pleasure. The home had been prettily decorated in a combination of gold and autumn leaves, and from eleven o'clock, when the guest began to gather, until late in the afternoon, merriment was at its height.
Mr. and Mrs. Fellows were married at Round Grove on October 11, 1871,
and have spent practically all their married life with in a radius of a few miles of the place of their marriage. Mrs. Fellows maiden name was Margaret Eiteman, and she was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1840, coming to Illinois when about eight years of age. Mr Fellows was born in Lee county in 1841.
Upon their marriage they made their home at Round Grove , and having resided in this vicinity ever since have had a splendid opportunity to see the development and many changes that time has brought about. In 1891 the subjects of this sketch moved from Round Grove to Union Grove and in the
following year moved to Lyndon, where they resided four years, and since that time have made their home in Morrison and Unionville, principally the latter place. Two children, Emerson and Lulu M., whose married name was Ewing, were born to them. Mrs. Ewing passed away in 1909.
Mr. Fellows was one of the many men in this vicinity who offered their services to the government in suppressing the rebellion in the south in the war of '61-66, and his military record shows that he enlisted on Aug. 13, 1862, as a member of Co. B, 75th Ill. Inf. with which he served for nearly three years, having been mustered out on June 12, 1865. He is at present a member of the Alpheus Clark Post No. 60, G.A.R. and his army comrades were present at the festivities of yesterday.
It is rather singular too that there were present five couples who had passed their fiftieth anniversary of wedded life, they being: Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. R.S. Lasher, Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Howe, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bent, and the host and hostess fo the occasion. Reminiscences of the time when Mr. and Mrs. Fellows took their marital vows were undoubtedly awakened in their minds when their visitors tendered them a second charivari, which they seemed to enjoy and took in good part. But this was not all that they were tendered, for their visitors presented them with several gifts of gold and many useful articles. A bounteous dinner was served at noon, the menu of which was as follows: chicken pie, mashed potatoes, fried sweet potatoes, cabbage salad, pickles olives, lima beans, coffee, jelly, bread and butter, apple pie a la mode, doughnuts and wafers. At the close of this bounteous and delicious dinner, Mr. Lum, commander of Alpheus Clark Post G.A.R. arose, and addressing Mr. and Mrs. Fellows and presenting them with a small package, said: "Fifty years of wedded life----through days of young manhood and womanhood; when hope beat high and the future allured, to the more sedate period when the years have lengthened and the evening shadows are approaching----are vouchsafed to few, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Fellows are to be congratulated upon having reached that rare interval in life. That their joys may yet be many and their sorrows few in their remaining years is the wish of Mr. Fellows' comrades of the Grand Army of the Republic, who tender them this slight gift of remembrance on their Fiftieth Wedding Day.
" Mr. Fellows responded briefly and with much feeling.
Those in attendance at this happy occasion included the following: Mr. and Mrs. George McNeil, Boone, IA, Mr. and Mrs. A.D. Comstock and Mr. Ralph
Comstock, Rochelle; Mr. andMrs. Wm. Kadel, Mr. and Mrs.Walter Irwin, Ira Kadel, Miss Helen Kadel and Mrs. Ella Andrews, Rock Falls.
