I am researching the family of David Franklin Gillespie, who was born in South Carolina on October 3,1860, and who died in Atlanta January 28, 1930.His father was Greenlee Gillespie, born in South Carolina, in 1824 and died in 1894, and his mother was Susan Lewis, born in 1828, also in South Carolina.Greenlee was the son of William Gillespie (1795-1880) and Lavinia Castleberry (1798-1880).William was (undocumented) the son of Joseph Gillespie and Courtney Unknown. David worked for the Atlanta Parks Department and was the director of Grant Park. He was married to Dora Elizabeth Henning, born March 5, 1870, in Georgia, and died April 5, 1922. She was a member of the Atlanta Baptist Church. They are buried in Atlanta at Westview Cemetery. They had five children, Daisy (Mrs. Greer Beavers), Adger C., Blanche Gillespie, Mrs. D. W. Todd, (given name unknown) and James Iler Gillespie.Their son, James Iler Gillespie, was born August 17, 1883, and died February 26, 1913. He married Jennie Mattile McDowell, born October 4, 1885 and died March 31, 1983.They are buried in Westivew Cemetery also. Jennie Mattile was the daughter of Fredonia Zipporah Spradlin, born July 4, 1858, in Heard County, Georgia. She died June 10, 1939, and is buried in Corinth Cemetery in Hogansville, GA.Her husband was James Sanders McDowell, born April 22, 1858 and died September 18, 1902. James Iler Gillespie was a fireman with the Atlanta Fire Department and died in the line of duty.He was the father of James Iler Gillespie, Jr. and Hugh McDowell Gillespie. Any assistance will be appreciated and I will gladly share what I have. Ginger Ferguson
