In late December 1853 the 3rd Artillery "H" company and other units shipped from Fort Adams, Rhode Island to California aboard the steamer "San Francisco", its maiden voyage. The ship incurred hurricane weather off Cape Hatteras and began to flounder. They were rescued about three weeks later by the ship "Three Bells" and several other ships.Survivors were returned to Fort Adams and some were again sent by sea around the horn of South America and others were sent across the plains by wagon train to California. Those in the wagon train wintered in Salt Lake in 1854.
