John KIRBY, born 16 Feb 1697/98 in York Co., Virginia, was the son of Robert Thomas Kerby and Mary Curson. John married Joanna Owens, daughter of William Owens and Lydia Lunsford, about 1723. 1 Dec 1740 John received a land grant in Goochland Co., Virginia, and sold said land 20 Sep 1748 to Thomas Massic, and removed to Lunenburg County. In Lunenburg County he purchased 280 acres on the south side of Pigg River on 12 Jul 1750. In 1752 this area became Halifax County, than in 1767 Pittsylvania County was organized. John Kirby was recorded in the "First List of Tithables of Pittsylvania Co., Virginia" which was established in 1767. This list includes: John Kirby and Jesse Kirby with 130 acres, Francis Kirby with 100 acres, Joshiah Kirby and David Kirby with 100 acres, John Kirby Jr, Tully Choice & negro Sarah with 1570 acres, and John Owens & sons William and John, negro Sam. (John Owens is probably the father of Joanne Owens) John Kirby's church affiliation was with the South River Meeting (Quakers) until 16 May 1767 when John and his wife joined the Baptist Church. John and his son Francis were named co-executors of the will of William Owen, Joanna's father. "Virginia Will Records" lists a will for John Kirby of Pittsylvania county, dated 26 May 1772. "Wit. William Dabney, Joyn Davis, Peyton Smithe. Ex., wife Joanna. Leg. to sons Frrones (Francis), John, David, Henry, Josiah, Jesse, and daughters Mary Hubbard and Susannah Thompson one shilling "starling" each, beloved wife Joanna Kearby the remainder of my estate."

Joseph Cole purchased his first land in 1782, 97 acres on the headwaters of Beaver Dam Creek. The deed books and tax lists show that he had accumulated about 1000 acres of land in Botetourt/Montgomery Co, VA. In 1792/1793 he appears on the tax list for Botetourt and Montgomery Co, VA. Joseph left Virginia around 1818 and moved to Buncombe Co, NC, where he received a land grant for 200 acres on Newfound Creek 5 Dec 1818. In March 1825 he sold his land in Virginia toJoseph Jr. Revolutionary War-Court documents indicate that he served in the army of Gen. George Washington after Battle of Germantown, saw no action and returned to Virginia after his 3 months enlistment where he re-enlisted and saw action in that state against the Tories. This inventory and appraisment of the estateof Joseph Cole deceased was returned to court and ordered to be recorded.1843 April, plaintiff against the heirs of Joseph Cole $2000.00 debts in county of Floyd formerly Montgomery Co., Beaver Dam waters of Little River, 97 acres, 50 acres can be seen in register'soffice in Richmond Book 59, page 304.
The dates and place of death of Joseph and his wife are unknown. Joseph is believed to have died bwt 1838-1842. The grave marker at Newfound Baptist Church Cemetery, Buncombe Co, NC was placed there in his honor by his descendents and the Daughters of the American. Revolution.

WILL of JAMES BARNETT, dated May7 1791.
In the name of God, Amen! I, James Barnett, of the County of Montgomery and Commonwealth of Virginia, being through the abundant mercy of God of a sound and perfect understanding and memory, do constitute and appoint this my last will and testament and desire it to be received by all as such.
IMPRIMIS
I most humbly bequeath my soul to God my Maker, beseeching his most gracious acceptance of it through the all sufficient merits and mediations of my most compassionate Redeemer Jesus Christ, who gave himself to be an atonement for all my sins and is able to save to the uttermost all that come unto God by him.
IMPRIMIS.
I give my body to the earth from whence it was taken in full assurance of its resurrection from thence at the last day. As to my burial, I desire it may be decent at the discretion of my son James. As to worldly Estate, I will and positively order that all my just debts be paid and the remainder to be disposed of in the manner following:
Item. I give and demise to my loving son James all the lands I possess in the Kentucky country upon his paying to my Son John 15 pounds and when said land is sold; also 2 bonds upon my son William, one 32 pounds, 9 shillings, and one of 30 pounds, and a note of 14 pounds, 15 shillings; and my young horse upon his paying to his son William 10 pounds to David 5 and to James 5 and to my daughter Rebecca 7 pounds, 10 shillings when collected from said bonds, which said bonds note and horse I give and devise to my son James and his heirs forever.
Item. I give and bequeath to my loving wife the fly mare and saddle, 3 cows and all the household furniture, also a bond on James Williams of 10 pounds, living in Green County in North Carolina I give and devise to my wife or assigns forever.
I also declare that the words were done by my express consent as witnesseth my hand and seal this 27th day of May, 1791

Notes for Anne Rachel Clements: Barnetts of Virginia Ann and Rachel Clements were two sisters, daughters of Jacob Clements. They both married Barnetts. Ann married Samuel Barnett. Augusta County, VA WILL OF JACOB CLEMENS – I have two copies of this will – one is the loose original will and the other is the will as it was recorded in the Augusta County Will Book. They are identical. (Two of his daughters married Barnetts) In the name of God Amen, I Jacob Clemens of the County of Augusts & Colony of Virginia considering the uncertainty of this mortal life & being of sound & perfect mind & memory blessed be Almighty God for the same but being now indisposed do make and publish this my last will & Testament in manner & form as follows. That is to say First of all I leave & bequeath unto my well & beloved wife Clemens her saddle mare and Furniture also her Bed & Furniture Also Twenty Pounds due by Felix Gilbert after paying what Debts are due by me out of it (if she does not marry) or else to Fall to the youngest Children, viz Ruth, Isabella Clements, like wise she is to have the Plantation during her widowhood. Also I leave and bequeath unto my Three Daughters Ann Barnet & Mary McNight & Rachel Barnet one shilling to each it is also my will that the above legacy be payed or tendered the day of my Burial.
