was born in Sterbfritz Hessen-Nassau Preussen Germany in 1744 and that his father was Johannes Herche b. July 12, 1708 and that his father was Conrad Herche, no wife listed and that Conrad's parents were Melchior Herche and Margaretha Weigand b 1635 in Sterbfritz Hessen-Nassau Preussen Germany.

Martin and wife Catherine Barringer resided in Mecklenburg Co NC. He was
listed as a public official between 1775 and 1785 In "The Lost Tribes of N. C. " by Worth S. Ray. This information from Joseph Harkey. "Harkey Family of North Carolina.Notes from Alma Johnson of Washington State and O.B. Harkey of
Arkansas and Flora Barrett of Oklahoma. He purchased land in North Carolina in 1769 . He was a member of the Crooked Creek Lutheran Church 1797. He provided public service and is listed in the DAR patriot Index. Mr Leeta Mae
Garret Ikelman has a DAR certificate Lew Wallace Chapter DAR Albuquerque NM.
DAR #723007 October 1987 The services he provided were listed as--
Sale of 10 bushels of corn and 30 bushels of oats to Mecklenburg County, N. C. on January 25, 1780 for the sum of 22-1/2 Spanish milled dollars. Autited accounts- Mecklenburg Co. N. C. #144.
Notes by Flora Barrett.Martin and Catherine had 7 children five boys and two girls.July 18, 1809 four of Martin's sons and his two sons-in-las sold a tract of land for 600 Spanish milled dollars to David Harkey , Martin's youngest son but he kept 1/7th of the money for his share of the estate.

Martin bought land in Mecklenburg County NC in 1769 on Dutch Buffalo Creekhis oldestson John was born in 1765 so he might have been in NC before that because the land he bought was near where the Barringers Lived. He bought130 acres from Mathias Barringer see deed book 4-509 Cabarrus Co NC>All his children are listed in the Cabarrus Co. NC deed book 7pg 273- 18 July 1809 when
they sold their interest in his lands to their youngest brother David after his death.

Martin Luther Harkey Sr. was born in PA around 1730. He was thought to have had two brothers, David and John who came to this country. Martin was married to Catherine (unknown) around 1763. He was a Revolutionary War Patriot. The early spelling of Harkey was Hercher, Hurchee, and Herge. Catherine was born around 1740. Martin, Sr. and wife Catherine purchased land from Matthias Barringer, brother of Paul Barringer, on March 30,1769. This land was a part of Mecklenburg County which later became a part of Cabarrus County, NC. The land lay on both sides of the Dutch Buffalo Creek. Martin and Catherine attended Crooked Creek Church which came to be known as St. John Lutheran Church. Martin Sr. sold land to son Martin Jr. in Cabarrus on January 1,1798. Martin SR. also sold 165 acres of land on McAlpin Creek to John Harkey. McAlpin Creek flows southwest into Sugar Creek in South Carolina. Martin Sr. and Catherine
Harkey had five sons and two daughters. Martin died around 1807 in Cabarrus County. Catherine died sometime after 1784 in Cabarrus County. Their son Henry married Mary Melchoir. Henry and Mary lived in Rowan County. Mary must have died before Henry, as she had her own will. David was the youngest of Martin and Catherine's seven children. He was born December 4, 1784 and was married three times. His first wife records I do not have. His second wife was Catherine Eudy, born June 5,1788. Catherine died November 27, 1829. On April 7, 1830 David married Elizabeth Ritchey. There were no children by David and Elizabeth. David died on March 29, 1855, and was buried beside his second wife, Catherine
Eudy Harkey, in the St. Johns Lutheran Church Cemetery where they have
readable markers. David and Catherine raised eight children, four girls and four boys. Son David moved west of North Carolina. Mary " Polly" Harkey, daughter of David and Catherine, was born on June 23, 1814. On May 1, 1835 she was married to James McCombs Sr. James was born between 1810-1815 in Cabarrus County. Mary and James had two sons and four daughters. Their two daughters names are listed in the St. Johns Church Records. James is listed as Kane McCombs in those records. Their daughter Martha Clemetine was born on April 2, 1843. She was married first Andrew Jackson Mowery Sr., Andrew was born March 16, 1836. They were married on May 30, 1865. Andrew Sr. died June 3, 1866. After his death Martha married Lafayette Josey on November 3, 1867. Mary and
James son William was born May 14, 1840. William served in the Civil War. He was married to Clementine Holshouser. James and Mary "Polly" Harkey McCombs were listed as heirs to the estate of David and Catherine Eudy Harkey.
