On September 27, 1839 James Gallagher was born to Francis and Eliza Duross-Gallagher at their home in Enniskillen County, Fermanagh, Ireland.In 1843 James was living alone with friends in Ireland as his parents and two brothers, John, (born 1840), and Patrick (born 1842),had gone to America and settled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania following in the footsteps of other memebers of the Duross family, James, John and Patrick who lived at 6th and Catherine Steets, Philadelphia.Eliza Gallagher's sister Margaret Duross accompanied the Gallaghers.Another branch of the Duross famiy settled in Maryland.
One of the female Duross descendants married a man named Lowry.
At the age of seven James was brought to America by a friend Anne Reilly on the "Royal Saxon" which sailed up the Delaware.At this time the family was living at 1180 South 10th Street in Philadelphia.When James arrived he found a new baby in the family, Margaret. Later Eliza Ann and Mary Frances were born in 1850 and 1854 respectively.A seventh child Anna was born in Philadelphia but died at around the age of two. Their father was in the grocery business at 1300 South 10th Street in Philadelphia.
Francis Gallagher died on July 19, 1856 a young man leaving the grocery business to Eliza and their five children, James, John, Margaret, Eliz Ann and Mary Frances.In 1873-4 the grocery and trimming store was sold out.Their mother Eliza died May 9, 1878.The son John died May 3rd, 1880 and later Maragret died December 1885.Mary Frances died January 1890.
At this time Eliza Ann lived with a cousin Mary Goldsborough (nee Boyle whose mothe was a Duross).They lived on Girard Avenue.Mary Goldsborough died in 1911.
James would later marry Frances Bell Smyser of Marietta, Pennsylvania on April 23, 1896 at St. Patrick's Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.James died on February 7, 1929 and his wife Frances Bell Smyser died in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1964.At the time of her death she was living with her son James L. Gallagher and his family.
