When WW I broke out, he joined the 3rd Battalion A.I.F. on 17 January 1916 together with his brothersAndrew and James. They left together for overseas on 3 June 1916 and arrived in Plymouth on 3 August of that year. By 24 September 1916 they had been shipped to Belgium and saw their first action in early October 1916. They served together until the end of the war. They served the remainder of the war in France and their service records show that while being wounded and sick several times they survived the bloody trench warfare without obvious permanent physical injuries. While they never spoke a great deal about their experiences after the war they often told hilarious stories about leave in Paris and London. They saw action in such battles as Bullecourt (May1917), Ypres (September 1917) and Passchendaele (October 1917).
During 1920 he and his brothers William and James were allocated soldier settlement blocks along the Mendoran Road out from Gilgandra.
