Ancestors of Robert Gary & Martha Massey GibsonUpdated October 31, 2004 | GARY'S FAMILY - Father's side includes GIBSON, LAWSON, PARKER and appears to have been mostly from North Carolina and Virginia. The oldest name I have in this part of the family is Francis Marion GIBSON who was born in Haywood County, NC in 1847. He says in a Confederate veteran's report that his father (apparently Solomon Gibson) was already dead and that his mother (apparently Nancy COLWELL Gibson) had just died when he enlisted in Com. E of the 36th NC in the fall of 1862 at the age of 15. In 1866, he married Eliza Jane MOORE, daughter of Levi and Ruth CALDWELL MOORE of North Carolina. He came to Bradley County, Tennessee in the late 1800's and when he died there in 1939, he was the oldest living Confederate veteran in Tennessee. His son, El Dorado GIBSON married Sarah Jeannette LAWSON, daughter of Thomas L. LAWSON and probably Prudence Ann STEVENSON in Bradley county, TN, where he died. The LAWSON ancestors go back to William an early settler in Southern Virginia. Mother's side - I have extensive information about the Hughes Line. Her father was a HUGHES descended from Orlando Hughes who came over from Glamorganshire in Wales about 1700.He settled in Goochland County, Va and various branches of the family have settled all over Tenn. and NC.My husband's branch was descended from Leander HUGHES who moved to Bradley County, TN after spending time in White and McMinn counties in TN. I also have extensive information about the MILLION part of this family from Washington County, TN and the associated families of BARRON, BAYLESS, KYKKER and SLIGER.Edward MILLION is believed to have come to TN sometime in the late 1700's (died in 1817). The MILLIONS are thought to be of English origin while the BAYLESS part of the family came toAmerica because of religious persecution by way of the Netherlands and settled originally in the area of Long Island, NY.The earliest ancestor I know of in the BAYLESS family in John BAYLESS who came to New York by way of Bermuda from Gravesend, England in 1635 on the ship "Truelove". MARTHA'S FAMILY- My father's name - MASSEY, it is said, dates from the Norman French Duke Hamon de MASCIE who fought with William the Conqueror in 1066.Though I have heard this in family legends, the earliest ancestor I can prove relationship to is one Arthur MASSIE who lived perhaps in VA and was married to an Elizabeth ALSTON.I know that his son Alston S. MASSIE or MASSEY was born in 1762 in Brunswick or Greensville County, VA and was married to an Emmeline ALLEN. Later MASSEYS lived in SC where they inter-married with WIGGINS and then moved to Monroe County, ALA. (Alston died there in 1853).Other family names on this side are DEES (DEAS),WIGGINS, SWANSON and NETTLES. On my paternal grandmother's side, I am descended from Charles H. (Hiliary?) HUDSON who came from Mecklenburg or Halifax County, to Monroe County, Alabama. He was married to Eveline TUCKER, also from Mecklenburg County, Virgnia. His son, Hiliary Estell HUDSON was a respected citizen of Monroeville, Alabama in the early 1890's and was married to Mary Ann Frances "Fannie" RYLAND, daughter of Joseph Hundley and Caroline Frances TUCKER RYLAND. On my mother's side, I know that Robert Lumpkin MARTIN was born in Oglethorpe County, GA in 1813 and that he married Elizabeth ROBBINS in 1836. She was born in Brunswick, NC. They both died and are buried in Coosa County, Alabama near Montgomery. I have extensive knowledge of the ROBBINS line all the way back to John ROBBINS who came to America from Thoddingworth, ENG and who died in America in 1660. This line also includes the names SELLERS, BONTICK, and HODNETT. The other side of my mother's family includes the LACY, McKNIGHT and FITZGERALD names. My grandmother's father, who lived and died in Wetumpka (Coosa), AL, was Willoughby Echols LACY and is related back to LACYS in several counties in Virginia and to Thomas LACY, the immigrant, from Wales.
