age by 1728 and could have been of age earlier. "Andrew Harrison

view on Elinor: "Our records acknowledge that Eleanor's name may
have been Elliot, but our researcher said it was customary for
guardians of orphans to be chosen from among relatives --
usually aunts, uncles if there were no older brothers or
sisters. Our researcher theorized that Eleanor may have been a
Battaile or a sister to Elizabeth Battaile's mother, who was
Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Major Lawrence Smith of early
Virginia. Both John Battaile, and Lawrence Smith were some of
the most influential men of Virginia."461 Spouse Research: 438

The following information comes from a book, "Highlights of the
Capital Hill Community - Jimmie Harrison Taylor's Research".
It was sent to me in an e-mail message from Ron Bewley
([email protected]) on Thu, 13 Feb 1997. There are two Andrew
Harrisons mentioned in the book, one the father of the other.
There is nothing about who they may have married. "Richard
Harrison also had a son named Andrew who died in 1718. His son,
Andrew (died in 1752) married Elizabeth Battaile. Among their
children was a son named Battaile Harrison." A handwritten note
in the margin says "This family line can only be proved as far
back as Andrew (d. 1718)". This note was followed by three
initials that look like "Npr" or "Wpr". I'll summarize what the
book says about the ancestors of Andrew (d.1718). Richard
Harrison had a brother named Andrew. Their father's name is
Anthony Harrison, Jr. Anthony's father was Anthony, Sr. (b. ca.
1563), son of Peter Harrison (d. 1593). Peter's father is John
Harrison. "Written history of this family seems to begin with
the will of John Harrison of St. Andrews, Cambridge, England
recorded in 1538 in which John mentions his sons, Peter, Hugh
George, and Richard." !Dan Harrison

daughter Elizabeth became the ward of Andrew1 Harrison in 1708;
two years later, she married Andrew2 Harrison. At that time
Andrew1 conveyed to Andrew2 a deed for 130 acres that
constituted Andrew's1 "home place", retaining a life right for
himself and his wife. According to published records, Andrew2
Harrison, Jr., first acted as guardian for Elizabeth Battaile.
The date of the guardian bond was August 10, 1708. Andrew2
Harrison's home was in St. Mary's Parish in the upper part of
Essex County, and there he died in the year 1718. The section of
Essex County in which Andrew2 Harrison lived and died, became in
1727, a part of the newly-erected County of Caroline.

Andrew Harrison, Jr., was born circa 1667, and died in the fall of the year 1752. He married, as has been shown in previous pages, Elizabeth Battaile.
The will of Andrew Harrison, Jr., has not been found, but it is probable that he did not leave one, since he deeded most of his lands to his sons during his lifetime, as will be seen in the record of the lives of his sons.
Children of Andrew and Elizabeth (Battaile) Harrison, Jr., were four:
4. i. BATTAILE H~nRIsoN,3 of Amher~t County, Virginia; married Frances, sur

Torrence and Allied Families, Robert M. Torrence
ANDREW 2 HARRISON (Andrew 1) was grandfather to a generation of young warriors. The grandsons came of age in time for service in the Revolutionary War. They lived in a part of the country where the war was popular and military service was thought to be a young man's obligation. Their war record speaks for ,~. itself. Having written that I have jumped ahead of the story.
In 1714 Andrew Harrison, Jr. was a constable in Essex County. In 1718 Andrew Harrison, Sr. died. In 1720 Spotsylvania County was created out of portions of King William, King and Queen and Essex Counties. The land that became Spotsylvania was pioneered by Lieutenant Governor Alexander Spotswood's colony of German iron workers on Rapidan River. English settlement in Spotsylvania County began in about 1724. In 1725 Harry Beverley sold 600 acres of land on Pamunkey River to Andrew Harrison of Essex County. In 1728 Andrew Harrison, describing the property as "where I now live" sold the 600 acres he had bought from Harry Beverley to Richard FitzWilliams, Esquire, as trustee for a group headed by His Majesty's Lieutenant Governor, The Honorable William Gooch.
Shortly before Andrew Harrison sold his Pamunkey land he obtained a 1000 acre patent in St. George's Parish of Spotsylvania County on branches of Wysell, also called Terry's Run, in what is now southeast Orange County. Some of Terry's Run has become an arm of a reservoir called Lake Anna. For planters of Spotsylvania and Orange Counties, Fredericksburg was the major tobacco market. Fredericksburg road ran along the east line of Andrew Harrison's plantation. By 1747 Andrew Harrison had assembled a plantation of 1800 acres. An adjoining 200 acres was owned by his son Battaile Harrison. As jurisdictions evolved Terry's Run fell within St. Thomas Parish of Orange County. In 1751 Andrew Harrison, planter wrote five deeds that are recorded
in series ~n Orange County Deed Book 12. Three of the deeds conveyed land to his Sons Lawrence, Charles and John. Samuel Kercheval and Richard Cousins were also conveyed land within Andrew Harrison's plantation. It has been my thought that Elizabeth the wife of Richard Cousins and Margaret the wife of Samuel Kercheval probably were daughters of Andrew Harrison.
In November 1753 William Johnson was granted letters of administration in the matter of the estate of Andrew Harrison, deceased. Andrew Harrison was survived by his wife Elizabeth and four sons: Battaile, Lawrence, Charles and John.

Andrew, Battle, Charles, George and William all appear in 1739, and the first two with Lawrence in 1741. Andrew Harrison and his two sons --not named-- are mentioned October 25, 1744; the sons among others being allowed "26 pounds of tobacco" for patroling and guarding a prisoner.
