1933: "Elizabeth2 Battaile chose Andrew Harrison as her
guardian," and later (Essex W. & D. 14, 1711-16, p. 181) this
same Elizabeth, now Elizabeth Harrison, wife of 'Andrew the
younger,' appoints Mr. John Battaile her Att'y. Feb. 11th,

Va. Council Journals. NOTES TO COUNCIL JOURNALS: John Battaile
of Rappahannock, afterwards of Essex county, was a captain
commanding rangers against the Indians in 1692 and was a Burgess
for Essex in the same year. He married Elizabeth, daughter of
Col. Lawrence Smith, of Gloucester county, and in his will,
dated Jan. 21, and proved in Essex, Feb. 1707-8, named his wife,
his sons John, Hay, Lawrence and Nicholas and daughter
Elizabeth. His eldest son, John, of the text, was born in Dec.
1695, and died March 4, 1732-3. He married Sarah _____. This
well known family has spread widely through the South and West.
!Internet Aug., 1996: Andrew Harrison and his son Andrew with
wife Elizabeth were ancestors of theHarrison lines of Loudon Co.
and Monroe Co. TN. He was born at least by 1707. (Records show
he was of age by 1728 and could have been of age earlier.
"Andrew Harrison (son of Andrew Harrison who died in 1718) on
August 10, 1708, gave bond in Essex County Court as the guardian
of Elizabeth Battaile, and on January 2, 1710, Andrew Harrison
and Elizabeth, his wife, deeded land which was bequeathed by the
said Elizabeth's father, John Battaile. By which we know that
the wife of Andrew Harrison, Jr. was Elizabeth Battaile,
daughter of Capt. John Battaile, of Essex County, Virginia, who
was Captain of Rangers against the Indians in 1692 and in the
same year a member of the House of Burgesses from Essex
County..." In 1708, Andrew1 Harrison was appointed guardian for
Elizabeth, daughter of John Battaile, deceased. !"Bill and Kris

the ward of Andrew1 Harrison in 1708; two years later, she
married Andrew2 Harrison. At that time Andrew1 conveyed to
Andrew2 a deed for 130 acres that constituted Andrew's1 "home
place", retaining a life right for himself and his wife.
According to published records, Andrew2 Harrison, Jr., first
acted as guardian for Elizabeth Battaile. The date of the

Elizabeth chose Andrew Harrison, Sr., as her guardian. She
married his son.

Admrs. & Assignes for & in behalf of the Court of the aforesaid County of Essex in the full & Just Sum of Five hundred pounds sterl. -
To the true payment whereof we bind our Selves our heirs Exors. & Admrs. jointly & Severally firmly by these presents.
Witness our hands & seales the 10th day of August, 1708.
The condition of the above obligation is such that if the above bound Andrew Harrison, Guardian of Elizabeth Battaile, his heirs Executors & Administrators do and Shall well & truly pay or cause to be paid’ unto the said Orphan, all such Estate & Estates as now are or hereafter shall come to the hands of the Said Andrew Harrison, as soon as the said Orphan Shall Attain to Lawfull age or when thereunto required, by the Justices of the Peace for Essex County Court, as -also to Save & keep harmless th’~ ~ ~ Successors prom all trouble, and Damage that Shall or may arise about the Said Estate, then this obligation to be void, otherwise to stand and remain in Full force, power

A deed, made January 2, 1710, by Andrew Harrison &nd his wife Elizabeth Battaile, shows that she is the Elizabeth Battaile for whom he was guardian, and who later became his wife. In John Battaile ‘i will, he bequeathed three hundred acres of land "I bought of Mr. Samp.
Darrell to her & her heirs forever", to my daughter Elizabeth. In the deed to f9llow, made as above,’ Andrew Harrison and his wife Elizabeth Harrison—’ ‘one hundred and fifty acres . . . being part of a dividend of land formerly belonging to John Fossaker& Elizabeth, his wife, and sold by them unto Samson Darrell. . . . Witness that they the said Andrew Harrison and Elizabeth his said Wife as well, for and in consideration of the sum of five thou~sand pounds of good tobacco, and cash to them in hand, paid by the said John Jones, àt and before the ensealing and delivery of these presents, the receipt whereof and of every part thereof the said Andrew Harrison and Elizabeth his said wife do hereby confess and acknowledge themselves fully contented,., satisfied, and paid and thereof do acquit exonerate and forever discharge the said John Jones, his heirs executors and administrators and every of them by these presents . . .
