"I found the following in an article on Lunenburg appearing in the Oct. 76 issue pg 8 out of print issue of the Izard County Historian:The school building...The building was about 20 feet square.The hewn logs were expertly notched at the ends to stand straight and strong.There were no rapters as are used where the ends or gables are boarded.Logs of smaller dimensions were used to form the gables as well as the roof support.A six fot stone fireplace was used as a means of heating the buiding.After the community outgrew this building, it was used as a dwelling for many years. The Elisha Marchant family lived in the building during one extremely bad winter.There were ice storms and heavy snows which caved the roof in.With the usual friendly hospitality shown during
hard times, J.P. Mankin, my father, invited them to live in his home until they could get settled elsewhere.The Mankin home consisted of three rooms and it was already crowded with four children a grandmother and an aunt, plus mother and father.Elisha Marchant had six children and it took him all day to bring his family to the Mankin home which was only half a mile away.One small mule pulled a sled through snow and ice to move the family and whatever food they had. It didn't take long for all the food both families had stored up to run out.When that happened, it was necessary to take the mule and slide and go to the store for supplies.The snow was so deep that they traveled over the top of fences.(This article was written by Leeda mankin O'Neal who passed away last year.She and her husband were responsible for most of the cemetery surveys.)
