Marriage Notes for Jessie Pidoux and William Sillitoe:
Jessie and Bill Sillitoe married in middle age. She had nursed Bill's first wife who died of cancer. This was in the 1930's. He was the Civil Engineer for the City of Ely and retired to live at Bexhill-on-Sea, Sussex. When war broke out, South coast residents were evacuated and Aunt Jessie and Uncle Bill came to live at Streetly, only a few miles from Sutton. As a child I came to know them from their visits to my grandparents at Mere Green and from family visits to their flat at Streetly. When the war ended they returned to Sussex and in 1946 set out on a visit to South Africa and Rhodesia on a long-delayed holiday that they had intended to take just as war broke out. When the plane was airborne Uncle Bill was stricken with a heart attack or stroke, and died. The plane landed in Egypt and Uncle Bill was buried in Alexandria. Aunt Jessie later made more than one trip alone to visit Joe Betts, her brother and his sons in South Africa and Rhodesia. She also visited California to see her married neice, Daisy Betts' daughter there. Jessie's house at Bexhill was a comfortable detached house. Later she moved to a bungalow at Ferring-on-Sea. When she finally was unable to live alone, she went to live at Herne Bay in the nursing home run by her neice Ann Clarke and family, where she lived until her death aged 98 in 1983.
