Notes for Margaret Ann Lovegrove:
The IGI Index records the christening of Margaret Ann, daughter of George Elliot Lovegrove and Ann, at St. Michael-Le-Belfry Church, York, Jan.22, 1852.
Margaret Ann James, née Lovegrove, was William Shepherdson's second wife. They were married in Scarborough on Feb. 19, 1887 when William S. (widower) was 46 and Margaret (widow) was 35. This was about the time of the marriage of William's eldest child, Hannah Frank "Abbie" Shepherdson, who had no doubt run his household since her mother's death in 1878. William died suddenly in 1891 after which his remaining children left home as soon as they could as their stepmother made life at home extremely unpleasant for them, according to the recollections of Kitty's daughter Nancy Michel (nee Wheater) and Amy's daughter Amy Green (nee Wrightson).William's son Willie, then aged 24, is noted on the death certificate as being "present at the death" but subsequently "left Scarborough on the train to Hull" and reportedly was never heard of again.
The second Mrs. Shepherdson was remembered as the stereotypical wicked stepmother, but it must have been a difficult situation for her to have been left a widow again after scarcely four years of marriage and left with two young girls, not her own, to support on what must have been very reduced financial resources. One imagines that she would have had to sell up the wines and spirits shop on Newborough St. and that would be why young William (who lived over the shop at the time of the 1891 census) had to take the train for Hull to seek his fortune.
The Shepherdson daughters never mentioned any child born to Margaret Ann and William S. although she was still young enough to have had one. Nor is there any record that she had any children from her previous marriage. If Margaret Ann later married for a third time, the Shepherdson family did not say and we would be interested to hear what finally became of her.
We found the name and parentage of Margaret Ann Lovegrove by finding the marriage record in the English Registry Index on a visit to (then) St. Catherine's House and obtaining a copy of the certificate. As noted above, there is a record of her christening at a church in York to be found in the Mormon Family History Library's I.G.I. Listings. However, I have searched the Microfiche Index to the 1881 English Census, in the Family History Library, and cannot find Margaret Ann listed in Yorkshire either as Lovegrove or as Mrs. James.
