George Pidoux (b. 1821, d. December 7, 1888)George Pidoux (son of John Pidoux and Maria (Pidoux)) was born 1821 in Clerkenwell, London, and died December 7, 1888 in Hackney, London. He married (1) Jane Martin on January 28, 1845 in Holborn, London, England, daughter of Robert Martin. He married (2) Emma Ellen Phillips on January 15, 1880 in Bethnal Green, London at St. John's Church.
Notes for George Pidoux:
George Pidoux was a cabinet maker with his own workshops in City Road, Islington. This is supported by family tradition and information given to John L. Pidoux, Lesley Green's uncle, by Rita Pidoux. Rita and Connie Pidoux were granddaughters of George and daughters of Henry Thomas Pidoux. Rita and Connie lived at Brighton and had furniture made in George Pidoux's workshops as a wedding present for their father. They also had a portrait of George which on Rita's death was given to Uncle John and is now in Canada. Lesley Green has seen this portrait and is of the opinion that it is a "portrait" made by tinting a photograph and that the style of dress is more of the 1890's and that it may in fact be a portrait of Henry Thomas Pidoux rather than of George who died in 1888 at the age of 67. (see below.)
Rita also told John Pidoux that George had held high office in the Order of Oddfellows. Uncle John wrote to the offices of the present Oddfellows (Manchester Unity) in 1989 but they were unable to find any record of George Pidoux although they enquired of local London branches. Many branch records were destroyed in the Blitz in WW II. Islington newspapers dated 1888 in the Archive at Colindale carry reports of Oddfellows' branch meetings and it was clearly a flourishing organization around north London in the late nineteenth century.
In the 1881 Census George Pidoux was shown as having a second wife, Emma, and a stepson aged 13. I was able to obtain a copy of their marriage certificate showing that George, a widower, married Emma Ellen Phillips, widow, in January 1880, but I have not yet found the date of death of George's first wife, Jane. Among the Pidoux photographs is one which, judging from the pose, the clothing and the ages of the couple, seems likely to be George and Emma around the time of their marriage.
The death certificate for George Pidoux reads as follows: When and where died: River Lea near waterworks, December 7th. 1888, George Pidoux, male, 67 years, Occupation: Furniture Salesman, Cause of Death: Found Drowned, Violent. Informant: Certificate received from R. Macdonald, Coroner for Middlesex, Inquest held Eleventh December 1888. This is the first specific details anyone now living has heard of this event. However, Uncle John has a note that he was told by some relative that either John or George Pidoux "was jostled in a crowd while walking home from Maples in 1892 and died a few days later."John P. in fact died of cancer in St. Bartholomew's Hospital in 1891. I visited the Newspaper Archive at Colindale to see whether there was any contemporary report or obituary in local Islington newspapers papers of Dec. 1888 about George Pidoux' death. I did not find any referance to the death of George P. but found reports of other similar incidents of street violence which were evidently quite common in those days in that part of London.
