Notes for Mary Elizabeth Wilkinson:
The following account of the life of Mary Elizabeth Wilkinson was told to Anthony and Lesley Green by Nancy Michel (nee Wheater), her granddaughter, Sept. 21, 1991.
Mary Elizabeth Wilkinson was born in Hull in 1841.Her mother was Hannah Frank Appleyard and her father was a sea captain, George Clark Wilkinson. She had a younger brother.Nancy showed us the family portraits of her great grandparents, Captain Wilkinson, his wife, her father Mr. Appleyard (first name unknown) and the two children aged (at a guess) about 8 and 5 years old, painted apparently in the late 1840's.Mary Elizabeth married William Shepherdson in 1864 and her first child, Nancy's Aunt Abbie, was born in 1865, Willie in 1867.Others died in infancy but then came Kate Emily born in Hornsea in 1874 and Amy in 1876.Mary Elizabeth died aged 38 in 1879.William Shepherdson married again and the family moved to Scarborough. The children were very unhappy with their stepmother and left home as soon as they could.Hannah ("Abbie") married Bertram ("Bertie") Wheater and Kate Emily (which she spelled "Emle") married his brother Percy Wheater. He was in the navy and only on half-pay due to illness but he married her because she was so unhappy at home.Kate Emle was called "Kitty" and she was 20 years old when she married. The two younger sisters Amy and Kitty were very close in age and affection and Kitty called Amy "Dick" as a pet name. The rest of the family disliked the second Mrs. Shepherdson and Nancy did not know what became of her.The son, William, as the story goes: "got on a train in Scarborough to go to Hull and was never heard from again."Nancy says he was about 24 years old. This would place his disappearance just after the death of his father in 1891.Family legends have it that he "ran away to sea" or that he went to Australia.
Nancy was the only child of Kitty and Percy Wheater.Percy Wheater was a career naval officer.Nancy herself has two sons, one a retired naval captain (submarine) and one a teacher in British Columbia, Canada, and both are married with families.
