Notes for HENRY GROSECLOSE:
From the book "Grosecloses and Descendants in America", by B. Clark Groseclose -
Recorded in Wythe County Marriage Book 1, page 3: "I certify that on yesterday I solemnized the rites of matrimony between Henry Groseclose and Elizabeth Copenbarger of Wythe County. February 27th, 1793, Barnabas McHenry."
The Wythe County Tax Assessment of 1815 has the following entry. "Henry Groseclose, one farm on the North Fork of Holston, 430 acres having thereon one dwelling of wood, one story high, 30 feet by 24 feet, two barns, one still house and smith shop, one corn house, one overshot grist mill, all of wood, valued at $2000; also 60 acres of unimproved land in said valley, valued at $90; total $2090."
Also in 1815, Henry purchased a slave girl. "Know all men by their presents that I, John Day of Tazewell County and State of Virginia, hath bargained and sold unto Henry Groseclose one Negro girl named Polly about fourteen or fifteen years of age for the sum of three hundred and ninety dollars to me in hand paid for which I the said John Day will forever warrant and defend from all persons whatsoever the said Negro girl to the said Henry Groseclose and his heirs in writing whereof I do set my hand and seal the 19th day of December 1815."
Per the book "History of Bland County" Henry built the home now occupied by the widow of Milton Groseclose, which is near the site of the first Peter Groseclose home. The log house as originally built had a breeze way between the main house and kitchen and servants quarters. Around 1880 this was torn away and the kitchen and dining room made adjoining the main part of the house which was also weather-boarded.
The house is a three-story house with basement; and in the attic, which was used for weaving, the old home-made loom frame is still stored. Henry left the house to his son, Dr. William Groseclose.
The 1810 Wythe County Virginia Census shows this family living about adjacent to the Jacob Groseclose and Adam Groseclose families. The genders and ages are two males 26-45, one male 16-25, three males 10-15, four males 0-10, one female 26-45, one female 16-25, and one female 10-15. There may have been visitors at the time because the female 10-15 and the second male 26-45 aren't part of the family.
Buried in Sharon Lutheran Church Cemetery, Wythe County, Virginia.
Notes for ELIZABETH COPENBARGER:
Elizabeth (Copenbarger) Groseclose may be the Elizabeth Groseclose living with her son William in the 1850 Wythe County census. It shows her age as 70, which would be wrong, and her birthplace as Pennsylvania which could be correct.
