John Harvey Haas was born in 1875, two miles north of Worden, Kansas in Willow Springs District and lived there until 10 years of age when his parent both died after which he grew to manhood in the home of his sister.
He was united in marriage with Edith O. Morgan in 1897 at Lyndon, and to this union five children were born:Irving Haas of Overbrook, Orville Haas of Topeka, Bernice Widau of Carbondale, John Haas of Overbrook and Claude Haas of Tulsa Olka.
After their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Haas lived near Burlingame two years then came to Overbrook which had since been their home.
Surviving relatives of Mr. Haas are his wife, his five children, seven grandchildren and a host of friends and neighbors.
Overbrook Citizen-A Tribute to Harve Haas
Lest we fail to do justice to a friend who has passed it seems duly fair that we give some special credit to him as a pioneer in his line. About thirty years ago "Harve" installed in his shop the first oxy-acetylene welding plant in Osage County.He evenwent so far as to fashion his own oxygen tank and filled it with his own home-made oxygen. Samples of his work were exhibited at our local fair.May parts of farm and road machinery could now be repaired instead of buying new parts which often necessitated long trips and costly delays.
As a result there is hardly a farmer within a radius of ten miles from Overbrook who has not had from one to a dozen or more welding jobs done by Harve's torch.A common question, as a dismayed farmer looked at a broken gear was, "Do you suppose Harve could weld that?" Harve could and usually did, thereby saving a costly repair and a long hurried trip to the city at a time when minutes were precious.
Years later came the "arc welder" and again Harve saw that here was something that would do jobs that oxy-acetylene could not do or could do it better, and again Harve pioneered by putting in one of the first of its kind.He took pride in mastering these expensive instruments so he could turn out good work.
A large lathe that was designed to do heavier work than the lighter machine was added to the equipment, thus saving the farmers many more trips to the city.Many of the smaller tools were made by himself in his spare time which added to his special equipment.
Many friends dropped in daily to watch him at his work or to visit when he wasn't too busy.Yes, Harve will be keenly missed.The place will never be the same.Written by a friend.

Harve H. Haas:Harve H. Haas 66 who had spent his entire life in Kansas died unexpectantly at his home in Overbrook, Monday.He was born in Douglas County near Worden, in 1878, and had been a resident of Overbrook since 1892.He had been a blacksmith there for about 40 years.
Surviving are his widow, of the home, one daughter, Mrs Walter Wideau, Wakarusa; four sons, I.D. Haas, Overbrook, Orval Haas, Topeka; Claude Haas, Tulsa, Okl. and John Haas, Parsons; one sister Callie Heim, Los Angeles and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Overbrook Methodist Church, with the Rev. L. S. Pruitt in charge, burial will be in Overbrook Cemetery.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Albright funeral Home for Mrs. Edith O. Haas, 89, Overbrook, who died August 21 in a Topeka hospital.Burial was in Overbrook Cemetery.
She was born in Wabunsee CountyOct. 30, 1879.She lived in Overbrook most of her life.
Her husband, Harve, died in 1941.She also was preceded in death by two sons, Irving Haas and Orville Haas.
Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bernice Widau, Topeka; two sons, Claude Haas, Carbondale, and John Haas Overbrook; One sister, Mrs Bertha Shepard, Pasadena, Calif.; nine grandchildren, and 23 great-grandchildren.

My folks came from Ohio in covered wagon to Elm Creek, Wabaunsee Co., KS.Where I and bertha were born.My folks and Orvie were from Williamston, Ohio.My daddy's son and two girls were born Zansville, Ohio.They did not come here as they were grown and married.
Daddy cradled grain, ran a corn sheller, herded sheep for a man that lived by the Burlingame Cemetery on a farm.He got my daddy to get the farm we lived on, helped him to build the big house that burnt.
She told about when a teenager and living in Peterton, Osage Co., KS. she would walk to Burlingame, about 8 miles to clean people's homes and then walk home again.
1880 Kansas Census lists her family as living in Waterloo Twp., Lyons co., Ks. (located just south of the Osage Co. line) when she was one month old which lead one to believed the family moved there and then to Elm Creek, Wabaunsee Co.
Edie had long brown hair that she wore in a braid wrapped around her head.

She was born Jan. 2, 1902, in Overbrook, the daughter of Herman Morris and Lucy Mari Reilly Krouse, attended rural schools near Overbrook and spent her life in the Overbrook community.She managed the Overbrook Hotel from 1933 to 1945. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Woman's Society of Christian Service at the church, Thimble Club, Searchlight Club, and the axillary to Amerson-Raible Post No. 239 of the American Legion, all in Overbrook. She was married to Irving Daniel Haas Feb. 22, 1921, in Topeka.They operated the Haas Garage in Overbrook.He died Nov. 2, 1959. Survivors include a son, Richard E. Haas, Berryton; a daughter, Dorothy Dean James, Overbrook: five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
