Notes for Johann Ulrich Katterman: FROM WHERE "KATTERMANN" AND "CORDERMAN" CAME Michelfeld has a population of about 1800 and the neighboring village is Eichtersheim, population about 1500.The two united in 1972 in the interest of territorial reform into the new municipality of Angelbachtal.Angelbachtal means Fishing Brook Village, because the fishing stream runs through both places. It is located about 12 miles south east of one of the oldest cities in Germany, beautiful Heidelberg. Bits from Eighteenth Century Emigrants, by Annette Kunselman Burgert, (for The PENNSYLVANIA GERMAN SOCIETY) from which we learned where our people came from in Germany.Michelfeld is traceable to a document from the year 850.At the time of heavy emigration in the 18th century the Gemminger-Hornbach family owned it.Farmers in the Kraichgau lived in the village and farmed fields around it.Barns were attached to the houses or adjoined them around a Hof or courtyard.Their shape and style greatly influenced the oldest barns by Pennsylvania Germans. A number of Kattermann families who are related to, still live in the same area.Visits and correspondence have taken place between them and some of us in the United States. It appears the spelling of Kattermann or Kettermann is excepted as one and the same in the Michelfeld area.According to Heinze-Casorbi's THE GERMAN FAMILY NAMES (1933), the name K(G)attermann comes from "dwells by the trellis" or railing, fence, grating, or lattice. No family crest was found. The wide-spread Kattermann name in Michelfeld originated from a German root word. This family name certainly comes to us from low German. The word "Kote", "Katte" or "Kot" is still used today. In North Germany and in Lower Germany they designate a hut, or a small house as a Kot.Even in England they are familiar with a similar word. There it is called a cottage (cottitsch). In Westfalen they call a small "Hutte" the "Kate" and the people who live in one a "Katner". The Forefathers of the present-day Kattermanns were probably originally peasants who neither possessed acreage nor a fenced-in yard. Their sole possessions was a small garden and house. In the course of time they acquired possessions and the influence of wealth and even magnificent estates. There was such an estate earlier between Eichtersheim and Eschelbach, the so-called "Katterhof".It received later the name of "Filiale" and belonged to the estate which was administered by the sugarworks Washausel. The Katmanner were therefore people who worked themselves up from servants and underlings to distinguished citizens and have not dishonored their birthright. * * * * * * * * * * * * More About Johann Katterman and Agnes Kuhlewein: Marriage: WFT Est. 1706-1749140,141 Child of Johann Katterman and Agnes Kuhlewein is:
