Notes for Edmund Sr. Fanning:
Edmund Fanning, the emigrant ancestor of the family, died in Stonington, Connecticut, December 1683.He left a widow, Mrs. Ellen Fanning, 5 sons and l daughter. He was the great grandson ofof Dominicus Fanning, who was Mayor of a city in Ireland under Charles the 1st and was taken prisoner at the battle of Drogheda in 1649, all the garrison, except himself put to the sword, he was beheaded by Cromwell, his head stuck upon a pole at the principal gate of the city, his property confiscated, because when Charles 1st made proclamation of peace, as member of the Irish Council, he advised not to accept unless the British Government would secure to the Irish their religion, their property and their lives. His son Edmund, born Kilkenny, Ireland and married Catherine, daughter of the Earl of Connaught, and came to New England with two sons, Thomas and William, and settled in Stonington. This is taken from an old tombstone at Riverhead, Long Island, New York.
Notes for EDMUND FANNING:
It has been transmitted from one generation to another in the Fanning family, that their ancestor "Edmund Fanning", escaped fromDublin in 1641, in the time of the great rebellion, in which one hundred thousand Protestants fell victims to the fury of the RomanCatholics, and after eleven years of wandering and uncertainty, he found a resting place in that part of New London now calledGroton, in the year 1652. On the town records the name is not mentioned till ten years later, but it is there in a way thatdenotesprevious residence. In the inventory of goods of Richard Poole, April 25, 1662, one article is--"Two Cowes and one steere, nowwith Edmund ffanning."After this he has a grant of land, claims bounty for killing a wolf; is chosen to some town office; ispropounded to be made a freeman in Stonington; and thus occasionally gleams upon us, till we come to the last item--the probate ofhis estate.
Feb. 1683-4. "The widow Fanning is to pay 10
shillings for the settlement of her estate, it being
done, at a called court which the clerk is to demand
and receive."
The estate was distributed to the widow and four sons--Edmund, John, Thomas and William, and two grandsons, Thomas andBenjamin Hewitt.
