Notes for Reuben Dowell:
From the book: Some Interesting Menard County Homes by Matilda Johnson Plews
Published in Petersburg, Illinois, USA 1967
Reuben Dowell migrated to Kentucky about 1913. He was married to Nancy Taylor, who was related to the Virginia Taylors and to several of the earlier presidents, including Madison and Monroe. Reuben and Nancy Taylor Dowell were the parents of Thomas Dowell.
Information from Gwendolyn Carlson Stumper: Reuben Dowell fought in the Revolutionary War. Reuben married Nancy Taylor, and they moved from Albemarle county, Virginia, USA and settled in Wayne county, KY abou the year 1813. Elizabeth Dowell married George Taylor, Nancy's brother, and Nancy Dowell married John D. Salmon. Nancy and George Taylor were first cousins of General Zachariah Taylor, who afterwars becaume president, and it is claimed that the Taylors and Dowells were related to the Madisions, Monroes, the Henrys and the Virginia Branch of the Franklins. Reuben and Nancy Taylor Dowell raised a large family, one of whom, named Thomas Franklin Dowell, was born in 1800. Thomas from whom we are decendents.
NANCY TAYLOR AND REUBEN DOWELL WENT TO KENTUCKY AFTER 1820.
REUBEN DOWELL REMARRIED AFTER THE DEATH OF NANCY TAYLOR DOWELL. HE
MARRIED JANE BOWMAN IN 1817 IN WAYNE Colorado, USA. KY. SHE WAS BORN IN 1796 IN
COUNTY, KY. IT IS NOT RECORDED IN THE DOWELL REGISTER, THAT HE HAD
BY JANE BOWMAN. ALL OF THE CHILDREN LISTED WERE NANCY'S AND WERE ALL
BORN IN ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Virginia, USA.. SOME SAY THAT REUBEN AND NANCY WENT TO
BEDFORD FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE GOING TO KENTUCKY, I HAVE NOT CHECKED
THAT AND DO NOT FEEL IT IS IMPORTANT TO OUR STORY.
I DO HAVE INFORMATION, THAT WITH ALL OF THE FIGHTING THROUGH THE EARLY
BY THE DOWELL'S OVER THOMAS AND AVEY'S PROPERTY, THAT REUBEN PROBABLY
NEVER RECEIVED HIS SHARE, ALTHOUGH, HE WAS NOTIFIED OF THE SETTLEMENT BY
THE COURT. HOWEVER, THROUGH HIS MANY LAND TRANSACTIONS HE ARRANGED TO
DO QUITE WELL FOR HIMSELF.
COURT ACTIONS IN LATER YEARS 1833-1836 INDICATE THAT REUBEN WAS SUED BY
GEORGE TAYLOR, HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW OVER HIS ADMINISTRATION OF HIS FATHER'S
ESTATE. DEPOSITIONS INCLUDED IN THE PAPERS, NOT ONLY ESTABLISH GEORGE'S ANCESTRY, BUT
INDICATE THAT REUBEN AND NANCY HAD LEFT VIRGINIA VERY BITTER. REUBEN ACCUSED GEORGE OFOPERATING WILLIAM'S FARM AFTER HIS DEATH AND REFUSED TO SHARE ANY OF THE PROFITS
FROM THE REAL ESTATE WITH HIM REUBEN. EVIDENTLY, REUBEN WAS NOT AWARE OF THOMAS
HENRY'S WILL, LEAVING THE REAL ESTATE DIRECTLY TO GEORGE TAYLOR AFTER WILLIAM'S
IT APPEARS HE FELT THAT EVERYTHING SHOULD BE SHARED. EVEN THOUGH REUBEN
WAS ADMINISTERING MARY HENRY'S WILL, THOMAS HENRY'S WILL HAD BEEN 15 YEARS
GEORGE WAS PLEADING WITH THE COURT TO HOLD UP THE AMOUNT REUBEN WAS DUE
FROM AVEY DOWELL'S ESTATE, WHILE HE ESTABLISHED THAT HE WAS DUE THE MONEY. I
HAVE NOT IDEA HOW THIS ALL TURNED OUT, BUT DOWN THROUGH THE GENERATIONS,
REUBENS DESCENDANTS HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT JOHN AND MAJOR DOWELL HAD CHEATED THEIR
ANCESTOR, REUBEN. WE NOW KNOW IT WAS MORE COMPLICATED THAN THAT.
