MONTROSE HERALD, October 21, 1932.OBITUARY:Bernard McCabe drops dead while working in his corn field last Thursday afternoon.....
For many years Mr. McCabe had been in poor health, but a man with much ambition kept on with his work. He had been living on a farm near Salem, South Dakota for several years, but last spring moved back to Montrose and settled in town, we presume to take life a bit more easy. His ambition was such that he went to the country and helped with farm work.
His son Earl McCabe, also E.E. Mathews who was with him urged him to go to the house when he complained of worse pain in his heart, then he had ever had before, but he did not do so and a few minutes later dropped over for his last rest.
A.W. Odell, our undertaker, was telephoned and went out and brought in his remains.
Bernard (Barney) McCabe was a man among men, fair minded, honest and industrious. He leaves a wife, two sons, Henry and Earl and a daughter, Mrs. Felix Donelan.
The funeral was held from St. Patrick Catholic Church Sunday morning. The remains were taken to Garretson and entered into the family burying ground. The Catholic Cemetery in Garretson, South Dakota.
The Herald expressed sympathy for his bereaved wife and family in their loss.
Bernard's stone in cemetery is dated 1856. This was put on by his son Earl in 19...?His death certificate shows he was 74 years old, so that would make his birth year 1858. (Info from Mary Therese Heiberger.)
