Who am I?The answer lies in the many people who came before me. I suspect they were simple, hard-working people who made the big decision to come to the United States in search of a better life for themselves as well as their offspring.By knowing who they were, it enriches our sense of who we are, how we fit into the overall picture.Now I want to find out more about them, as well as any of their descendants, to get to know them a little better. PATERNAL FAMILY: MELCHOIR KOWALIK, b. abt. 1810 in Poland, and EVA RESPONDEK, had six children: CATHERINE, FRANK, JAN, JOANNA, MARIA, AND THOMAS, who were all born in Poland and emigrated to the US, settling in Panna Maria, Texas. Their son, JAN KOWALIK, was married in 1866 to ANNA DZIUK, whose family also came from Poland in approximately 1854.They had ten children: ALEXANDER, JULIA, ANTON, VERONICA, ELIZABETH, JAN, FRED, FELIX, IGNATIUS, AND THOMAS D. Their son, ALEXANDER KOWALIK, b. 1866 in Panna Maria, Texas, was married in 1891 to ROSALIE KOTZUR (Kocur) b. 1873 in Panna Maria, Texas, and the family eventually settled in Koscuisko, Texas.They had eight children: SYLVESTER, GERTRUDE, PAULINE, MARCELLA, HENRY, LOUIS, EMIL, and EDMUND. EMIL KOWALIK, b. 1908 in Koscuisko, Texas, was married in 1928 in Kansas City, Mo. to MARY HAZEL STARK, b. 1908 in Topeka, Kansas.They had one child, DELORES (me), in 1932 in St. Louis, Mo. MATERNAL FAMILY: WILLIAM HENRY STARK, b. 1869 in Saxony, Germany, son of JOHN STARK and EVA MARY SIMON, came to the US in 1870, and the family settled in Topeka, Kansas.In 1893 he married ANNA TORRENCE, b. 1873 and d. 1897.He then married SADIE ANNIS JEUREL on Dec. 19, 1900 in Topeka, and they hadthree children:ALBERT, HARRY, and MARY HAZEL. | DEE KOWALIK HELFRICH HOME PAGE Updated June 16, 2002 |
