--------------------------------------------------------
Records that might provide more information about David Henry and his father were destroyed during the Civil War, when the town and Courthouse at Chambersburg, PA were ransacked and burned during a Confederate raid in July, 1864.Many records and vital statistics perished which could never be replaced after that raid and resulting fire.
There is no exact record of the name of his parents, nor of any brothers or sisters, but there is evidence for some valid guesses.David Henry was sixteen years old when the 1810 census was compiled. In this census only the head of families were names, but the others in the family were counted by age and gender.A Henry Stitzel, possibly our David Henry's father, was named as the head of a family in Montgomery Township, Franklin County, PA.
The family record is listed as shown:
Henry Stitzel
Males
10 - 16 = 1 - David Henry (16)
45+= 1 - Henry (45+ - born in 1744, 66)
Females
16-26= 2
45+= 1
Since this was the only Stitzel family recorded in Montgomery Twp., with a son aged 10-16, it seems reasonable that this is our forefather David Henry and his father's name was Henry.
Another instance linking Henry Stitzel as David Henry's father involves the ownership of the Old Stitzel Farm in PA.In the summer of 1912 the Daniel Dustin family accompanied by Grandmother Stitzel (Mrs. Joseph Stitzel) when on a trip east, including a visit to the Stitzel Homestead, an old stone house.A follow-up visit by Quinter and Iva Mae Stitzel to the County Courthouse at Chambersburg resulted in direction to the farm for a visit.Records showed this farm was owned in the early 1800s by Henry Stitzel. When the farm was acquired is not clear, but records show he sold it on August 6, 1824.This farm is located about two miles south of the Village of LeMasters to the Church Hill Cemetery corner, then east on that road to the first farm on the north side.East of that farm is an intersection still known as Stitzel's Crossroads. In 1975 the farm was owned by Mrs. Enos Horster of Chambersburg, and she also owned the farm adjoining it on the east, also known as a Stitzel farm. That east farm was tenanted in 1975 by Laban Wingert. In the early days this was Montgomery Twp., but later a division was made and the area is now Peter Twp.
See Janet Gray's binder for detailed information about the Stitzel homestead and Stitzel's corner.
Notes
-----
Appears to have come to America in 1794, settling in Greencastle, PA. He may have been somewhere else before actually settling in Greencastle. For instance, there is a Henry Stetz in Heidelberg, Berks, PA in 1800.

When comparing this to the Henry Stitzel family in Montgomery Township, Franklin County in 1810 -- This would fit for David Henry, and maybe an older brother who was on his own by 1810.This could fit for the girls if the two sisters were born between 1785 and 1794 -- and there were two more girls born between 1800 and 1810.

This shows that Henry and his wife, both in the 45+ category, had one 16 year old boy and four girls (two under 10 and two 16-26) living in the household. The 16 year old boy was surely David Henry Stitzel, who was born in 1794.

1820 Census - Montgomery, Franklin, PA

The two boys under 10 are a puzzle -- could they be grandchildren or other boys taken in to raise? Also, this census would seem to point out that the two oldest girls were now married, which makes sense - they'd likely be 26 to 35 yrs old.It would also mean that the younger daughters were probably 8 or 9 in 1810 -- and married young at 18 or 19.Either that, or we have wrong assumptions about where the families were located / or family names labeled incorrectly in the census records.
