Came to Texas in 1853, settled at Providence, about 8 miles north of Kountze, TX.He first married Rachel Overstreet who died about 1844 near Montgomery, Alabama.He then married her sister, Elizabeth Overstreet who was born in 1826 in Alabama.Her father was Samuel Overstreet.
Rachel had two children, John & Sarah Elizabeth.Elizabeth had Columbus, Mary M., Hiram, George Dennis, James Harvey, Daniel Walter, H. David, Benjamin Franklin, and Ira Clay.
Hamp Herrington helped to form Hardin County in 1858 and became its first judge serving some 12 years without pay and leaving the job of his own will.

Hampton Jackson Herrington was married first to Rachel Overstreet.After her death, he married her sister, Elizabeth.Rachel's mother and sister, Elizabeth, had come to live with Hamp to help care for the children following Rachel's death.Some time later, Hamp, very unromantically, proposed marriage as Elizabeth washed and dressed the two little boys on the back porch.she agreed so he went to town and brought the preacher back to unite them in marriage, in 1845 (The year Texas became a state).
Four children were born while they lived in Alabama: Columbus, "Sis", Polly and Miriam.In the fall of l853 he Herringtons along with other family members, moved toEast Texas.They crossed the numerous rivers enroute by ferry or log floats traveling in ox drawn, two-wheeled carts.The laborious journey took three months.During the journey George was born with the assistance of Hamp and Sis.
The Herringtons bought 250 acres known as the Bumstead place from Henry Clifton for $800.00 in gold pieces.They built a large square house of logs with puncheon floors.
After they established their home on Village Creekfive more children were born: Harvey-1856; Daniel Walter-1858; David-1866; Frank-1868; and Ira-1870.(dates are about)
Hamp was elected as the first judge of Hardin County and according to his son Frank, served 13 years with no salary.He resigned of his own account.
Hamp was an active member of the Providence Baptist Church in the Zack Guynes communiy.He was a past master of the Masonic Lodge in Kountze, as well as a Royal Arch Mason.He helped organize the first Masonic Lodge in Hardin Co.He was said to be a quiet, unassuming man with strong, religious beliefs and very decided oppinions.He was self educated, studhing a speller and arithmetic also reading whenever he was not busy with many tasks.
Hampton Jackson Herrington left his imprint on Hardin county and many of its residents.His is a name to be respected.
