Herry was born in Sullivan County, New York, but it looks like he didn't stay there long for his family moved a lot.
Jerry enlisted in the Civil War in September 1864, a week later than his brother, and got $1000 bounty money for joining. He was a private and in Co. C., 1st Reg. N.Y. Cav.He was discharged form Camp Pratt, West Virginia, on June 8, 1865.
On Dec. 31, 1865, he married Eliza Johnson in the Protestant Episcopal Church in Buffalo in Erie County, New York.
Jerry remained in Pennsylvania, near the Township of Litchfield, Bradford County.Three of their children were born there:Rose, who died and Ellie and Linnie (Malinda). They moved to Wisconsin and bought 50 acres of land from his father, Gabriel, for $700 in Sept.., 1868.His brother Albert, bought land at the same time.
His daughter, Minnie, was born there (1869), near Eureka in the Town of Rushford, and died a year and a half later in 1870, and is buried on the lot of Ira Carpenter, her uncle.
Jerry sold some of his property to his brother, Albert, in Dec. of 1873.He then moved to the Town of Main, Outagamie County, where on March 28, 1880 he purchased an 80 acre farm from Ephrum Golf of Appleton for $275.The farm adjoined his brother's, David Heavener Carpenter. The exact location is:E 1/2 of NW 1/4 of Sec. 12, Town 24.Their remaining children were born there:Stella, Georgia, Willie and Clarence.Only Georgie (d. 1965) and Stella (b 1873) lived beyond infancy.
When Jerry died the mud was so deep they had to take him to the cemetery in a horse drawn lumber wagon. He is buried at Oak Hill Cemetery, Town of Maine.
He may not have been born in 1841 -- his army discharge indicates his birth date to have been 1847.
