|This genealogy covers the James Hooks family of Covington County, Mississippi and the Robert Young family of Edgecombe County, North Carolina and thier descendents. Other families represented are the Cooksey and Mathis families. All had thier roots in Virginia and/or North Carolina. This is an abreviated part of a larger work that was edited to comply with the FTM 2000 name limit. I have extensive information available on the Kincheloe, Graves (of Mississippi), Bullock (of Mississippi), Pleasant (of Virginia), Mathis/Mathew (of Virginia, Georgia and Texas), Stribling (of Virginia and Texas), Tubb, Davis and several others. If there are any queries about those families please send them along. |
I have hit a brick wall with James Hooks. He was born in either North Carolina or Maryland (depending on which census record and which part of the family you talk to)before 1795. He died in Simpson County, Mississippi prior to 1840. He settled in the southeast corner of Simpson County where it abuts Covington County and his property straddled the county line. He was a typical borderer of his time running free range cattle and growing what could be grown in that country for the family's personal consumption.
Another ancestor that has bedeviled many researchers over the years is Silas Bullock. He sired a large family that grew with the county over the years. There are many a citizen of present day south central Mississippi that can claim Silas as an ancestor. The family was heavily intermarried with most of the other early Covington County settler families, i.e., Graves, Sanford, Mathis, Campbell, McRaney and others.
"Devil" John Young of Alabama was another stonewall for me until a year or so ago. A distant cousin, Sarah Metcalf, saw my web page and pointed me toward a Young family that I had previously dismissed as a link. After a lot of library time I discovered that she was indeed right. I now can trace back to Robert and Mary Young of Edgecombe County (now Nash), North Carolina with a fair degree of assurance. The line goes back another three generations to Richard and Jane Lee Young of Accomack County, Virginia but I do not feel that the extant records support a positive link. I have included those individuals and links for those of you who feel inclined to do further research.
For those of you who were familiar with my former web page on James Hooks and "Devil" John Young will find that some of the information previously included is now gone. That information is still available; just not on this web page.
As with any genealogy, there are sure to be errors. I would appreciate any and all corrections to errors that you find in this material. All I ask is that you also include the source of your opinion.
I sincerely hope that this family history can fill in some of the gaps that might be sprinkled on the branches of your personal family tree. If you have any additions to this tree please share. Any family photos that you have of any individual found in the material would be appreciated by all researchers and I will be happy to reimburse any cost for copies and postage. Thank you for visiting the site and happy hunting in your personal quest.
