|John McElhaney was born about 1760 in Ireland.At about age 9 he arrived in the Boston Harbor on the ship "The Faithful Stewart" sailing from Aberdeen, Scotland.John was one of seven people to survive when the ship sank in the harbor, wearing only a ladies chimese when rescued.We are unsure of who raised John or how he got to Pennsylvania after arriving in Boston.|

John and Sarah McElhaney had eight children: Sarah, John Miller, James William, Alexander, Henry, Samuel and Annie.
John died 18 Jan 1845 and is buried in Muddy Creek Township, Butler County Penn at the sie of the old Muddy Creek Stone Church.
In 1857 William sold his father's farm near Prospect, in Franklin Township in Butler County and moved his mother Sarah, his wife Harriet (Wimer), and their children: Joseph, John, Isophena, Sarah Ann, Marion and Edward to Jackson Township in Venango County Penn.Sarah, John's wife, lived with their son William and his family till her death 19 Dec 1860.She is buried at Forrest Chapel Cemetary in Jackson Township.
John and Sarah's son William was in the Civil War.While a prisoner at Andersonville, Kentucky he witnessed his brother-in-law Joe Wimer, being hung by his thumbs till his death.
