|I am one of the great grandsons of Indonesia's Sugar Barons, Major Oei Tiong Ham (1866-1924). My given Chinese name would be Oei Shun Yoo. I am currently filling out everything I can find out about what happened to the Family business, Kian Gwan, and the descendents of Oei Tiong Ham. He had 26 children by 8 wives, 13 boys & 13 girls. My grandfather Oei Tjong Hauw, was the oldest of 4 boys from Wife #3, Ong Mie Hoa Nio.|
The Oei's came from the south of China in the Tong An district of Fukien province. The name itself is a Hok Kien/Fukien version of the more familiar Cantonese WONG. The first Oei I have detailed information for is Oei Tjie Sein (1835-1900) who came to Indonesia from China to start a trading company known as Kian Gwan.
My Father was born an Oei, but changed his last name to the Mandarin form of Huang before coming to the US. I also have quite a few things in Indonesian that need translating. If you'd like, please feel free to email me if you have any information or are related! You may call me S.Y.
