Iland's IslandUpdated September 5, 2000
|I am looking for Ilands and Islands world-wide!The name is found today in Ireland, England, Canada, Australia, and the U.S., but is fairly rare.|
JOHN ISLAND, 1785-1852
Our branch of the family descends from John Island who lived in County Sligo, Ireland, in the townland of Emlaghgissan, just outside Ballymote. John died in 1852 at the age of 67. He had fought in the Napoleonic wars, serving in six general regiments, the last of which was the 88th Regiment of Foot, also known as the Connaught Rangers. This information comes from John's headstone and his pension record as a Chelsea pensioner. He received the General Service Medal for his years fighting in France, Spain and Portugal.
We do not know who John married, but some think is was Catherine Knox. We know of one descendant, Michael Island
MICHAEL ISLAND (Abt 1805- abt 1850)
Our line descends from John's son, Michael who married Alice Moore and who stayed on the land and farmed. Michael had several sons. We descend from William (1839-1925+-), who married Jane Black and was a farmer.
Sons who left include
Thomas (b. 1829)
James (b.1830 who went to Canada)
George (b. 1831)
Francis (b. 1840)
Robert (b. 1843, died October 20, 1860)
It is possible that two of the sons may have joined the Royal Irish Constabulary and moved to County Carlow.
Michael and Alice's daughters were
Elizabeth (b. 1831)
Jane (b. 1846).
Elizabeth may have married a man named Robert McNabb on December 31, 1851 at Ballymote Church.
WILLIAM ILAND (1839- abt 1925)
William and his wife Jane Black had a large family. We descend from his son, Richard (1874-1955+-) who married Louisa Dunne. Richard worked for the post office, and left Sligo to go to Drogheda, County Louth.
John Iland, another son of William and Jane, stayed on the land until both his parents died of old age and senility; he sold up and disappeared from Irish records about 1925, when he was 45 years old, and probably a bachelor.
Alice Iland (b. 1871)is believed to have married Alex McIntyre.
Thomas George (b. 1876) nothing known
Charles (b. 1886) went to England.
WILLIAM ILAND 1912-1994
The son of Richard, William lived in Mount Merrion,on the south side of Dublin, and had three sons, who all left Ireland, and four daughters, who still live in and around Dublin. Bill Iland was probably one of the last people of his generation with the surname Iland to live in Ireland in recent times.
If any of this information ties to you, I would love to hear from you! Happy to exchange more details...would love to hear what you know.
