The Gremar surname was "Grimard" originally, and our ancestors came to the United States from France in the early or mid 1700's.Many Grimards can be found in Canada, also, but we have not found a connection to that branch of the family. Our early Grimards settled in Vincennes, IN which was part of the Louisiana Territory at that time. The Grimard surname has many variations in spelling today, such as: Greemore, Gremore, Gremar, Gremard, and Grimore.
In my husband's family, the oldest Ivie ancestor we have found is Curtis Ivie who settled in Wabash County, Illinois in the early 1800's.A pair of scissors handed down in the family was inscribed "brought to the US from Ireland by Grandfather Ivie", indicating that Curtis (or his father) came from Ireland.Other records indicate that Curtis was born in Virginia.
