His wife was named Elizabeth in deeds.
He wasn't mentioned in his father's will.
1775-land grant in NC-now Washington Co. TN near the Sinking River.
Walter Krumm says his father may have been Jonas, another son of Samuel.
Family tradition says he was the son of Abraham so that is the assumption I'm making.

Tenn. Archive land records say that James Denton was brother-in-law of Col. John Tipton.Col. John Tipton married Martha Denton who was asister to James.Martha was named in her father's will so this would indicate that our James was the son of Abraham.
Samuel Cole Williams in the "Dawn of TN Valley and TN History states that James Denton from Shenandoah Co. on Sinking Creek dividing Ridge between Sinking and Brush Creeks adjoining Joseph Tipton 470 acres (environs of Johnson City) later owned by Col. John Tipton, Denton's brother-in-law, Date of entrant April 3, Patent Nov. 19, 1775.(Does this prove that James was the son of Abraham since Co. John Tipton's wife, Martha, was named in her father's will?)
After his wife died he lived with his children and died in Bath Co. KY just 3 months short of his 100th birthday.
A family story says that he lived with his daughter Mary (Polly) and her husband, Col. John Tipton Hunt. When he was reading he wouldn't answer when spoken to and Sarah Hunt Markwell said her son had the same trait and that "that was the Denton in him". (Mary Burnham).
