John "Rock" Smith was 1 of the men who settled with Rev. Richard Denton in Wethersfield, CT.After religious dissension developed, they moved to Stamford CT.In 1641 John Smith Sr. and Jr. were each awarded 2 acres for homes and 3 acres of woodland.While here, John acquired the name "Rock" and was often called Rock Smith in documents.There were several other John Smiths in the area so this may have helped tell them apart.Later both Richard Denton and John "Rock" Smith moved to Hempstead, Long Island, NY.In 1659 John "Rock" was allowed by the town meeting to become an inn keeper in Hempstead.
John "Rock" deeded away much of his property before his death.Mentioned in various deeds are his sons John Smith, Jr., Jonathon Smith, and Joseph Smith.Also his daughter Hannah Tredwell and his sons-in-law Samuel Denton Sr. and Francis Chappell.
