Notes for Peter Hanks:
Peter served an apprenticeship, and was made a member of the Ancient Order of Coopers, becoming a Master Cooper. He made hogsheads or barrels in which tobacco was shipped to England from Annapolis (abt. 450 lbs per hogshead). He must have decided that to be a successful cooper he should find land with good oak wood for barrels and a good stream on which he could build a sawmill to cut the wood. The water powered sawmills operated with a blade held vertically in a frame that moved up and down by a crank on the end of a water wheel shaft. He purchased 100 acres near the Great Fork of the Patauxent River northwestt of what is now Annapolis with much timber and water for a sawmill. He called the property Beyond Far Enough. The deed to the property was written in 1766 when it was sold by Peter's son William.
