"George is thought to be the son of Ann ???, wife of John CATHEY, but by an unknown husband by the name of CATHEY or CATHIE.John CATHEY in his Sept 1742 will refers to his wife 'Ann Cathey and *her* 2 children George CATHEY and Jean CATHEY.'"
One researcher states that George and Jean Cathey were the parents of four boys and four girls, and that one daughter Frances Cathey married a Graham.I find no evidence of this daughter.
George Cathey and his wife Jean probably immigrated to America from Ireland in the early 1700s, perhaps along with other Cathey families.
7 Oct 1749 - received a grant of 400 acres on the south side of the north branch of the Catawba River (in present-day Mecklenburg County, NC).
24 Jun 1751 - received 312 acres in Anson County (present-day Rowan County, NC) from Lord Granville "in the parish of St. George, joining the N. Side of James Cathey's Creek, Cathey's land, and Robert Reed...Surveyed 20 Nov 1750.
25 Mar 1752 - George Cathey, "planter of Anson County" received from Lord Granville a grant of 630 acres in Anson and located on Sills Creek near Marlings Bridge and adjacent to property owned by James Alexander. [Rowan County Deed Book 3:1, proved July 1755.]
Note: on this day, records show that heads of Cathey households received 7 land grants totaling 3,752 acres.The Cathey Settlement (also known as the Irish Settlement) was located west of present Salisbury, NC.It is described in great detail by author Robert W. Ramsey in his book "Carolina Cradle."

Last Will and Testament: In the name of God, Amen, I, Jane Cathey, being in a low state of health at present, but blessings be to God enjoying as yet a sound mind and a disposing memory, and I do now constitute, ordain, and appoint this to be my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, to wit:First of all I give and bequeath my spirit to God who gave it, hoping for acceptance in and the purchase of Jesus Christ my Lord, and as touching my worldly affairs, they are to be disposed of in manner and form following, to wit: First item - I give and bequeath my body to the dust to be buried in a decent Christian like manner and then all of my debts and funeral charges to be paid out of my Estate by my Executors hereafter mentioned. Notes for Archibald Cathey: Epitaph reads "Son of Jean Cathey" Archibald did not marry.He died the same year as his mother, and they share a headstone. In January of 1767, Andrew Cathey, planter of Mecklenburg County, and his wife Rebecca deeded to his brother Archibald Cathey of Mecklenburg, also a planter, 300 acres on the east side of the Catawba River below the mouth of Paw Creek.The terms were stated as s5 on the 15th of January, and were stated again on the 16th of January as £10 NC money.The land was located in the upper half of a 600 acre tract that had been granted to the same Andrew Cathey on 21 Oct 1756. On 1 August 1769, Archibald Cathey sold the land back to his brother Andrew for £250 NC currency.The witnesses were James McCord and John Henry.This deed was recorded during the October 1769 session. |
