William Henry Marchman left home about 1848, at the age of 16, and drove a
six-mule team to Alabama for a Mr. Harrison. He migrated to Daleville, Dale Co.,
AL. He was employed by Bob Harold Harrison as an overseer of slaves for
several years. Then he was enployed by Mr. Aaron Thompson, one of Alabama's largest land and slave owner.
About 1857, William Henry went to Clay Co., GA, and married NANCY DAVIS,
his old childhood sweetheart. He returned with his new wife to his home about
10 miles south of Ozark, Dale Co., AL, and began raising a large family.
During the American Civil War, he enlisted at Daleville, Dale Co., AL on
March 4, 1862, in the Conferate Sates Army, as a private, Company D, 57th
Alabama Infantry Regiment. He was subsequently promoted to 2nd Sgt. He lost
an arm at Peachtree Creek in the Battle of Altanta. He was discharged at
Eufaula, Barbour Co., AL on July 20, 1864.
After the war, William Henry was a staunch Democrat and became the tax
assessor for Dale Co., AL for several years, later he became the sheriff. He was
considered an educated man for his time and had a large library in his home.
He donated 2 acres of land for a church, which he named Shiloh Missionary
Baptist. He donated 2 acres of land for a school, named the Marchman School.
The school grew to a three teacher school, and was consolidated into the Dale
Co., AL school system in 1954.
Mrs. Nancy Marchman, widow of Wm.Henry, was on the pension roll in 1914.
William Henry Marchman was included in the Census of 1860 for Dale Co.,
AL, as follows: 1241-1241.

Marchman married Josiah Morgan Dean, brother of James William Dean from
whom I am descended.This information come to me from Evelyn Lee Kelly,
grandaughter of Mary Marchman and Josiah Morgan Dean.I am sorry to say
that I don't have her address, but I might be able to locate the address
of another descendant of that union if you are interested.
