Notes for Edwin Hough:
The 1871 census shows Edwin and family as listed living at 17 Fisher Street in Carlisle. Peter Jowers visited the house on 9th August 1996 and found that the house had been divided into small business units, the unit he visited was called Maelstrom, where jeans and casual clothes were being sold. In Edwin's time his solicitors' office was in the same building. Three servants were also living in at the time, Jane Graham, Annie Craig and June Milburn.
In the obituary of his son, Edwin Leadam Hough it is stated that ELH was the eldest son of four and that there were two daughters. The 1871 census shows only one daughter, another could of course been at another address on the night of the census, or who had died young. It would appear more likely that another daughter was born between Edwin Leadam and Kighley. (Check)

His career notes in the book "Bengal Army Officers" (British Library - India Office Collection) mentions that there was no record of active service, but perhaps records were lost in the Indian Mutiny? Notes for Maria (Polly) Wood: She was in India at the time of the Mutiny and managed to convey her children to safety on her own, travelling a great distance through mutineer controlled country, carrying phials of poison for each child in case of capture.
